  • War not always declared?

In my last few games a strange thing has been happening occasionally. I will suddenly be at war with someone but war was never declared. It seems to only happen in the modern age. I don't remember this kind of thing happening before. Has anyone else experienced this?

Can you give us an example of what happened?

Only in the ancient times, when I didn't have a contact with a civ "X" I get into a war without declaring hostilities, but in modern age that neve happened to me

You can suddenly be at war with everyone because you initiated the use of nukes ....

Me (Babs), and Persia were the only 2 left on my continent. Persia was at war with Germany. I got a pop-up message that told me I lost my source of furs (which I was getting from Germany). I got some more pop-up messages telling me about 2 or 3 other civs declaring war on Germany. It sounded like a nuclear war so I traded maps with everyone except Germany (that's how I found out I was at war with them). It looked like Germany and Persia each had one city nuked. In other words, Germany nuked Persia and someone nuked him back. I don't understand why nobody told me I was at war with Germany. We had been at peace the entire game.

Someone else initiated it. I hadn't even built any nukes yet. Next time I'll try to check one of the auto-saves from before this happens. Then I'll try to post it if you guys want to check it out.

On a semi-unrelated note, I've seen the AI initiate nuke war several times now. I've had 2 games where Russia has attempted to nuke me first.

Ah yes, I (semi-)remember it now. It's a "bug" in the game, and my previous post should have read:
"ANYONE's initial use of nukes causes everyone else to declare war on them, UNLESS they were already at war with the civ being nuked."

Thank you for your reminder of the affair, since I am approaching the same situation in the game currently being played.

Firaxis has it in their sights for a fix.

That's interesting. I've never heard that before (and I've actually never been in or around a nuclear war in this game since I usually am able to avoid them like the plague). Hopefully they get it fixed soon.

I've had everyone declare war on me for nuking, even though I was at war with the civ I nuked

Skywalker, I think everyone who isn't at war with your victim will declare war on you. My problem was that the game would automatically put me at war with anyone who used the first nuke, but I wasn't told I was at war.

If you get military alliances with the other civs first you can avoid having them declare war on you.

Ahhh well, a strange thing happened to me then the other day.

See I was in the middle of this peaceful game (hardly any wars had occured(IIRC there had been one between China and India (good story that one))) (if any of u have checked out my thread entitled Hmmmmm weird, it describes the game) and well I thought for a bit of fun I would drop a ICBM right on top of good old Paris. See now France was a little bit peeved (well we had been good friends for a number of years now). The weird thing is that all the other nations went down to Annoyed with me but none declared war. I'm pretty sure that I was the first to initiate a nuclear exchange by the way.

Now I ended my turn and France decided that it should teach me for ICBMing them, so ICBMed two of my cities (two of my most important cities to). Now France must of been less liked than me because all the other nations bar about 1 or 2 (out of 15 AI controlled ones) declared war on France. Meanwhile my turn comes along again and only half the nations are still Annoyed with me the rest have gone back to Polite.

Well looks like I am one really loved nation out there. Sometimes its good to be me.

I'm talking about vanilla Civ. 1.29f. I don't know if this bug is also present in PTW.
