    Ave to All.

I'm Darth Balrog and I'm new around here...

    I played Civ I + Civ II + CTP I + CTP II !
    ...and now Civ III...

Anyway, this is the question about civ. III farming:

WHY YOU CAN'T FARMING WHERE THERE'IST "SOFT WATER"?!!

I mean, I started in a location with a lot of wonderfull grass lands, some hills and mountains and the sea. But NOT RIVER !
So I couldn't farming the grass lands !!! That's wrong!
The river closer to me was on another continent !!??

So, is it possible to adjust this situation?
How I can farming the grass land before electricity if I have the sea but not the river or lake?

    I hope u understand what I mean.

    Darth Balrog out.

    You can't.

No river or lake means no irrigation until electricity and there is no way around that. If you watch an AI civ in this situation it just mines every tile it can.

The good thing is, is that it doesn't happen often, it's very rare even.
As Cerberus says, lake can be used to irrigate aswell.
note: irrigation will not help you while in despotism!
(a frequent habit carying over from civ2 to civ3)

Don't forget to patch to 1.29 either and have fun

        Yep. Cerb is right.

What you can do, if there is any source of water on the continent/island, is to irigate all the way to your city.

It takes quite some time but I do it quite often if I can afford a couple of spare workers.

I'm sorry, but this is an huge bull**** !!

In the real world is quite impossible to see a continet without a river (or lake of course...). So, or they would made a river (or lake) in every continent (at least one, but more would been better) or they could made the possibility to farm with sea (as in every civ it is...).

What you can do, if there is any source of water on the continent/island, is to irigate all the way to your city.
Only if there is a river on the continet...
Anyway, this is tedious work !! Not fun!! I really don't understand why they do this big mistake!!

I understand they don't made the multiplayer option for make money and become more rich...

C'mon I like this game... But this suck.

Already I'm here to slam , I would liked to see in CIV III more possibility to edit the governaments.

          Bye,

          Darth Balrog.

Of course, if you feel like it, you can always restart a game--but I feel that a good challenge always makes a game more satisfying to play, especially if you win.

The best way around this would have been to add a city improvement called "water catchment" or something like that. Many ancient civilisations had complex systems for catching and storing rainfall. Building such an improvement would then allow irrigation within the radius of that city.

Another one for the wish list.....

EDIT: It is not possible to do this at the moment. The closest way would be to use the editor and change the tech that allows irrigation anywhere from electricity to construction. You could argue that knowing how to build aqueducts and transport water should allow irrigation everywhere.

"Water Catchment", eh? Sounds like an interesting idea. But it could make city growth too easy...

I usually focus on mining first before I irrigate.

By the way, nice to see that you've also got a Tibetan flag, Daz.

i like the idea of a way to get irrigation through an improvement. smaller islands without rivers would really benefit from this early on in a game...

No Fresh water = no irrigation, makes sense.
Yes, a continent would normally always contain some source of water, but some flat islands you would struggle to find enough water to irrigate the entire island - There's every chance that had Australia been a touch more flat and closer borders in places that it would be in a simular situation.

It's totally fine that this 'rare' ability is in the game.

It can get even worse Mr. Balrog. I've had starts with lots of plains and no fresh water for 10 tiles!

Always check the bays and inlets Terrain Info using shift right click. Sometimes what looks like sea is in fact fresh water (2 food instead of 1) and you can irrigate from that.

Mind you, mostly isn't an issue under Despotism (unless lots of plains as my opening words).

Hope for a better start - I think the map generator gives starts according to difficulty level, so the higher level you start, the harder the start.

What I do on Deity is sit and generate maybe 16-20 starts at once, and pick the best to play to completion. Maybe one day I'll be as good as Aeson and play ANY start - but for a newcomer to Civ3 you just got unlucky. Civ3 is NOT same as Civ2 - I think in general it is a bit easier, but after a few games you'll appreciate Firaxis went for simplest answers to most questions.

Good job we can mod and add units, eh?
