I'm glad that Civ 3 is available as a demo.

The demo sizes are 377 MB for Civ 3 and 379 MB for the GotY version.

Well, 18 months after Civ3 hit the shelves. Better late than never

I'm glad they have made this demo too. Is the GOTY version multiplayer ?

I've notices they don't link to it at Civ3.com or at Firaxis.com. That's too bad, because I feel that some people would still be interested in discovering the game, even today.
Really, the Firaxis Civ doesn't seem to be commercial

Well by the size of the demos I would say that the hole game is included, and that just some sort of counter has been added to stop playing after one hour. If I were a game developer I wouldn't be happy with that either. It's not safe enough.

A demo... why? Those who wanted to try the game before buying it have already done so, if you know what I mean.

As for the size of the demo, if it is indeed the whole game, they have made a big mistake.

The whole game is around 650-660 MB for vanilla Civ 3; not sure about the GotY Civ 3, so it is not the whole game.

I'd say that it is the whole game. Can anyone tell me what the point of bringing out this demo is?

377 MB is less than 3/4 of 650 MB, so a substantial portion is missing; 270+ MB is not included. They probably bareboned it as much as possible. In regular Civ 3, my Art folder is 485 MB; the Sounds folder is another 160 MB. These two folders account for almost all of the game HD space, with a little more than 10 MB for the rest of the game.

Maybe they removed the unnecessary and bugged code...

Me too can't understand the concept of a demo so far from original release. As it is, I'd bet for a bold move: make the original (patched) game released as cheap 15$ or free.

The two expansion alone will gain some more customer from this move, and so Firaxis and Atari will gain an added flow of fresh money. But I'm a dreamer...

                            Kring,
before civ came out in Europe, I had an alternative version, it was packed in two files (the second one being the sound files and it was fully working ...full intro movie, all sounds, victory movie etc...). Even added together this was just about the same size as the demo. Maybe they cut out a few things, but it is possible the demo IS the full game.

Now that Conquests was announced, I'd say that the demo intends to grab some new players, those who didn't buy Civ3 neither its first XP. It's all a marketing effort... "Hey, they will release a second expansion for Civ3." "What do I care? I don't even have the original game..." "Hm, there's a Civ3 demo available at Download.com, maybe you should try it."
