  • Bug in Civ3

I was messing around in civ3 and I found a bug. If a civilization is significantly weaker than you and in the game for world peace, such as France, demand tribute of "11,111,111" gold per turn and all of their cities. About 90% of the time they will give you what you want in the name of world peace. A way to dominate the world easily is to play a game with 16 civs so you are very likely to have a civilization right next to you. Just keep creating warriors and when you find the other civilization demand the tribute. Right now I have a score of 4017 in 480 A.D. and I have only created one city myself - the capital. The rest I have conquered or demanded as tribute. You have to wait until you discover the Republic to really start dominating the game because you will be able to rush buy everything with gold. Other than that, it is a great cheating experience.

Is this "vanilla" civ or ptw? I have ptw, and wasn't able to ask for more than 111,111 gold per turn... and do you have to be in war with that civ?

I just have the basic civ3 version. It must not work with civ3 and no you do not have to be at war with the civilization.

I seem to recall that it was patched a long time ago. If you are not using the current patch, you are playing a different game.

I'm playing civ3, which I bought with my hard earned money in respect for all the hard work by the Sid Meier and his crew.

Pirated eh? I would not have admitted that on this site. Bye.

Ooops, pirated? You have only a few moments left on this forum, mate...

Did I say pirated? I meant to say plated? The box was plated gold. It was imported from India. I don't know where "kazaa" came from. I think it was because I was in the middle of writing an essay about my deep resentment for kazaa and its large network of pirates with no morals. Sorry for the confusion.

Well, make sure the Indians didn't fool you, and I guess you'll still need to patch it!

I was not complaining about the game. I was merely pointing out a way you could manipulate it to your benefit.

This is old news, xxmikejoycexx. I mean, I could announce that Lindberg made it across the Atlantic but I don't think many site visitors would care.

xxmikejoycexx, that is not the only "bug" in a store-bought (or Kazaa'd) version of Civ3. You will come to grief if you do not patch (and the kazaa'd version will not patch). It's well worth it!

                            Be nice folks.

Yes, it WAS a bug in 2001. Integer overflow bug which allows you to demand tributes the AI can't pay. So the AI just makes money out of thin air.

This bug was fixed a long time ago.

Go to Civ3.com, and download the 1.29f patch. It should fix that bug, and several others. As a bonus, you'll also be facing a tougher AI which has learned some of the more blatant exploits against it.
