Yes - we would survive. We have a great defensive position. They won't get past the choekpoint. The first build there should be walls if this is our intent.

Our cities south of the chokepoint would be more exposed, but they still have to get through mountains and jungle. It will help neutralize the chariots.

We will have spearmen, and soon Immortals (I believe that we will find a source of iron.) They will have chariots, and soon spearmen. Yup we can do it.

The point about the early GA for GS was raised earlier. I agree with you jon. An early war has a lot going for it.

Jon and Eli - how about the flip side to your question - if we don't wage an early war and get a jump on GS - if we go for peace and trades and building - do you think we will survive?

        That's my bigger fear.

Our geography ain't great. The only real plus - other than our strong team of course - is our connection with Lux in the early stages, and being able to keep GS from meeting them. Eventually they will meet and this advantage will be lost. So, can we parlay that early advantage in a peaceful game into a strong enough medium term position to compete with GS. My suspicion is that we won't be able to.

Do you think GS would stay non-aggressive over the long-term? I doubt it. As soon as they had a tech and military advantage or an alliance, we would be toast. I'm sure of it.

Now - if we took the continent early - hmmm - now we're talking.

perhaps we could start a war, than have them geta GA, than give them something for peace

hopefully the losses of the golden age will out work the losses of what we give them

Hmm - that is devious - and inviting...

Maybe it was Willy's destiny all along to end his days crushed beneath the wheels of a chariot ....

I don't think they would go for peace when they are in a golden age like that. It's not like we are dealing with the ai.

I'm hovering. Each side has convincing arguments.

Is that because your avatar is a hover craft?

And I thought it was the Millenium Falcon.

But you are right - some of these calls are prety close to 50/50.

Ummm... my avatar is a Star Destroyer.

It just happens to be the scene right after Hoth, before the Millenium Falcon flees into the asteroid field.

                          you know your star wars.

There was something I was going to say about his, but I am not sure.

Well they seem to want peace for now, but that may be just to throw us off. They are a talented team and may be very adept at waging war using regular units. But it is still early. War chariots can be useful even with spearman defending. I know I have used horseman successfully with spearman defenders. It takes more of them- but with war chariots that is easy because of their cheap cost.

So we should be wary that they can use their war chariots up until the middle ages when we get pikeman. But even without their war chariots I'm sure they are fully capable of waging war with normal units.

Diss - I know what you are saying. I have the same inkling. The southern warriors should give us an early warning if they are coming with chariots. By then, we should have sufficient spearmen, in cities or fortified positions, plus some Immortals for counter-attacks, plus maybe even a charior or two of our own to mop up their 1hp chariots after an unsuccessful attack.

But yes - they are a good team. I don't think we can ever let our guard down.

Without their War Chariots, a war with GS would be largely one-way, UNLESS they got Iron Working.

just pasting this here because it relates to strategy of war.

But I have my misgivings about Iron working. Like I said we will see what our situation is when we get the tech. If we can't connect to Iron giving them Iron can be dangerous. But if we can't connect to iron we will also want to keep on their good side (and research horse riding). But even if we can connect to iron it is not in our best interests to give them iron working. Especially if we plan on going to war. We can take over any cities they place in the jungle without worry of reprisals from war chariots (we have to knock out any roads they place on our first turn of war obviously). If we get pushed out of the jungle war may be necessary. We will see what happens the next 12 to 15 turns.
