Yes, the fish on the ocean coast, the cow to the north-east and the incense in the north-west are all in position with the city - when the city expands, we will have all 3 in our radius. We also have game located just south-east of the city (in the forest) which should be used right now to assist in production/food...is that another game icon I see under our worker??

Concerning the lake on the south side of our capital - with it being there, our capital doesn't have to build an aquaduct to expand past size 6 - this is GREAT news...and of course we can use the lake to irrigate our terrain.

But heh - are we on an island?? Looks like it to me.

And - we are off in a nice cozy corner of the world.

If not an island, then a peninsula, with the mainland to the SW??

Question - what's the plan for the worker - build road to next city site?

Nope. This is an "unlisted" forum.

Did you see GoW's starting position the C3PTWDC forum? As Wittlich so aptly put it - OUCH. An island of one tile. I betcha we are on an island too. Only larger.

Didn't someone set the start conditions, or were they all random? This could be a real boring game for the first upmteen turns if everyone starts on their own island.

Then again - research like mad and get that caravel going.

I too think that we mgiht be on an Island - and if you'll notice, our Capital doesn't have access to the ocean...so building our second city should be a priority...even if the island turns out to not being big enough for 2 cities, we may have to cram the second one in there somewhere - just so that we can eventually build boats.

I always build cities within two of eachother (except in some cases of leaving more room for a capital city

Of course, we don't know for sure if that is GoW's real starting position...but if it is, we don't have to worry about one team for the time being....now about the other four teams...

Within 2 of each other?! Wouldn't you have city overlap? I fit cities as close together without getting the overlap - basically, after the city expands, that is the template I use for planning future cities and have them interlock as close as possible without overlap. Of course, ocassionally I will get a slight overlap because of terrain restrictions.

                            I have tons of overlap

but I feel what is important is to have lots of mutually supporting cities

and to use the land you have to its upmost

I usually take my next city to the best spot available, at least 6 tiles away. In the early game, I like to stake out territory. The citizens in the early game se the best tiles, and when you get into the later game, they use the others. What concerns me more in the early game is staking out land. As much as I can get. With as many resources and bonus (eg wheat and gold) tiles.

If on an island, as I think we are, Witt's comments apply.

Why in godz name for a demo game did they not put everything at normal settings - or even Pangea - for the sake of a quasi-normal game. It would have been more interesting for meeting other civs, etc.

I suspect they set it at random, and it generated a world of islands. Or - maybe only two of us started on islands. Doubt it. Or - maybe there is a big landmass waiting for the first wave of immigrants.

Or - maybe Markos set it up this way to see how all the white mice play....

(I have asked a couple of times now about marcos playing the Greeks individually in this game - ie without a team - and everyone always remains strangely quiet - what gives??)

I usually don't build that close unless terrain is limited. If terrain is limited I will use up every single "good" terrain- grassland etc. So if we are on an island we should utilize every decent terrain square possible.

And of course if we are on an island we will have nothing else to build. We should build settlers, temple. And shift our focus to getting caravel before the Republic.

To the west I saw that mountain chain. Hopefully there is something beyond that.
