A view of their capital? For 40-50 gold?!? You must be kidding! That's a horrendous waste of money at this stage in the game... we don't need no stinking view of their capital.

Having that money around to upgrade a warrior to a swordsman, on the other hand, might not be such a bad idea...

In fact, I am no really convinced that embassies are worth all this gold, but I was answering specifically to a question regarding contacts, ... as you perfectly know.

We can also see if they are prebuilding.

As for the intelligence part of it, WHEN we create an Embassy, THEY will also see our Capitol. Arnelos & I tested it out last night in an online game.

So the question more becomes, what do we want them to see?? Would we rather have them see a rich & thriving Madrid with Luxuries attached (i.e. at a later time) or a poor struggling Madrid right now.

Well, yes, the Warmongers are a worry, as is their mental midget leader. However, I think that the sentiment against them is strong in Arabia and Turkey as well, and so I think a coalition could be effected to put pressure on all of their fronts, and smash them. They would do best to expand southward, for then they have a better chance of survival. As much of a sadist this Genghis Farb Khan is, he is not a fool. A kneebiter, perhaps, but not a fool. He will know how to control his country, I believe.

I also agree that embassies should not be established until our enemies begin work on their great wonders, so that we may choose one to finish quickly before the other poor fellows can.

Sorry, but if prebuilding means building a palace to switch to a wonder that cannot be posible in the capital, because they already have a palace there

I didn't know that the other civ gets also a look at the capital. In that case I say: Don't waste our money unless we really need the embassy or we are really rich (not likely). Let them waste their money instead.

Good Idea. Just make sure we set Madrid to build something military on this critical turn of intelligence. We can shift back to rexing mode afterwards. Then they might think we are emphasizing defenses. If they think so, that's good for us!

And please post screenies of the other capitals, so we can discuss them.

You know, I’m never sure what’s the point of embassies in Civ 3. Yes, having an embassy makes trade easier and the opposing civ friendlier, but aside from that, it might as well just be called the trade station. What does it do? You don’t get to know anything about the opposing civ except for a brief look at the capital. Big deal.
