We can build our new settlers form the City that we found in El Valle de los Toros. With the 2 Herd of Cattle and Irrigation (possibly even a Granary), we should have no problem making more Settlers and Workers from this upcoming City.

[ooc] I have the feeling that we are currently living in a green belt that is between a Jungle Belt and a Desert one. Madrid and the El Valle de los Toros or both on it, but it looks like desert to the south and Jungle to the north.

At least we didn't start in the middle of a Jungle, like the SPDG did

They say that in the swamps live strange squid-men that capture you and drag you down alive to the bottom of the swamp, where presumably you die or something.

If we cut down the forests by the coast by Madrid, then we can irrigate by City #3 if we need to. Fortunately there are fish to feed us for the present.

          The swamps and jungles

They are such a horrible place, perhaps they will help protect us from hostile tribes?

Who would want to slog an army or even an explorer through a swamp? Why would they want to capture a city separated from their empire by a swamp?

The place we must populate and control is El Valle de los Torros. We must fully explore it and settle it and defend it from outsiders.

This great new valley will become Spain.

This reminds me a very prominent rules change in PTW. Military units on swamp tiles have a chance of dying of disease each turn. It is not unusual to lose a few military units over the early course of the game if you leave them in the jungle.

Just thought I'd point that out as something many people who haven't played a lot of PTW may not have noticed...

Yeah. I was fighting a major war in the early game with archers once. Most of the entire central portion of the map was jungle. While most of my units were fine, I did end up losing 3 of them (out of 10 to 20?) over the course of the first half of the ancient age (which is a very long time and lots of it spent in the jungle, so I'm guessing that the percentage can't be very high).

The first time I had a unit (an archer) killed on a jungle tile and it gave me the message that the unit had been killed by disease, I was quite shocked

As for patterns, the main reason I've lost units to disease was a habit of mine. I have a habit of placing warriors or spearmen on tiles I plan to build cities on in the immediate future (and the settler just catches up because I've already built the road to the city location). When I've done that in PTW games and the warrior/spearmen is left to sit on a jungle tile, sometimes it dies of disease. After a while, I just adjusted by always remembering not to fortify units on jungle tiles and forget about them.

So as long as we don't leave a unit in the jungle for an extended period of time, that should minimize our risk (but I really don't know what the formula is for it).

Does this apply all the time? It applied before if the troops were fortified, but not all the time.

Most of the times I've seen it happen it was due to a unit being fortified, yes. But I seem to recall that I lost an archer or two at some point that were not fortified. That said, I don't always pay very close attention to individual units when I'm playing huge map games and I decide to play as a warmonger.... I honestly don't remember whether some of those killed units were fortified or not, but with the archers I somehow doubt it (though it's possible I fortified them just because I had nothing better to do with them).

I notice that the site contemplated for the next city produces 2 shields when mined: they will be lost if we build the city there. The tile just SW would let us enjoy those additionnal 2 shields, without losing the shield produced by the city. Are these 2 additional shields worth the additionnal one tile-road needed to connect with Madrid ?

Senor Torquemada, dare I say it, is right. The glorious amounts of wealth that await us in that area if mined cannot be overlooked.
