  • Spanish Worker Central: Building a better Spain

I encourage all Govenors and landowners to make requests in this thread about needed worker projects that our serfs can undergo.

We should also debate what projects are most necessary and should be done first.

In my mind the most pressing need for our non-Cow Valley slaves is to make a road to the new Spice city so that Spices can be linked to our nation.

I agree on that. The spice trade must be controlled.

Also, I´d like to request some roading to the silks nearby Santiago, and a mine in that same city (still studying the best location).

I was discussing this with NW and I'll post some details a little later today. It mainly deals with Jungle clearing...

            Suggested Jungle clearing plans

Because we are Non-Industrious, our workers take the longest to complete a task. One of the longest tasks to complete is the clearing of Jungle. We will need to do this for several reasons:

            1) to provide a kill zone on our boarder, so that an enemy can’t use the jungle for defensive support.

            2) to allow some of our cities, current and future, to use the cleared tiles for growth and shields

With our limited number of Workers, we will need to start clearing fairly soon.

            First off, some basics:
It takes 1 worker 24 turns to clear 1 jungle tile. It also takes that same worker 9 turns to road a Jungle tile. To get 1 Jungle tile cleared in 1 turn, it would take 24 workers to clear that tile. Of coarse, this isn’t possible, at this point in time. 24 turns is also a bit too long for one tile to be cleared. With our current cities, we have 7 Jungle tiles that need to be cleared to provide a proper kill zone. That is 168 Worker turns to complete (not counting movement). This is not really an acceptable solution at this time. What to do then?

We do a compromise jungle plan, that uses at this time, 3 workers at the start with a maximum of 6 to 12 workers when going "full steam". First off here is the Worker chart:

With 3 workers, it will take 8 turns to clear the jungle and 1 turn to road it afterwards. We can then bring a 2 worker team in to mine or irrigate afterwards. With movement, each Jungle tile would take 10 turns to be cleared and roaded. If we use more than 3, then we would have problems with a worker who isn’t doing anything during the road phase. If we use 2 workers, then it will take 12 and 2 turns to clear and road (15 turns with movement). 3 workers is a start for now.

Later, we can get another 3 worker team together. Once we have 6 workers for jungle clearing duties, we can do some things a little differently.

With 6 workers, we would have 2 teams, 1 for clearing and 1 for roading, The 2 worker road crew would road the jungle in 5 turns, so in 6 turns (with movement), they would have roaded 1 jungle tile. They move the next tile and do the same again. The clearing crew (4 workers) would then come behind them and clear the tile in 6 turns. So, with 6 workers, over 6 turns, you get 1 Jungle tile that is roaded and 1 roaded jungle tiles that is cleared. Then, if we add 3 more workers (9 total), 1 to the road crew and 2 to the clearing crew, the same would take 4 turns to complete the cycle. At this point, it better to do things a bit differently if we want to add more workers to the crews.

At 12 workers, we should have 2 roading crews of 2 each, 6 turns total roading per crew. We would then have 8 workers for the clearing crew, completing 1 tile clearing in 3 turns. So in 6 turns, you get 2 Jungle tile that is roaded and 2 roaded jungle tiles that are cleared. But this also becomes very worker intensive for clearing Jungle and isn’t that necessary.

As for were to start, I’m discussing with Nuclear Winter on the initial production of workers for Santiago and the beginnings of clearing and roading of the Silks. This will make up the start of the initial 3 worker crew and then would be supplemented from then city in the Flood Plains. But Santiago has a need to get some of that jungle cleared for production purposes.

Clearing the jungle is NOT a priority.

Roads and infrastructure come first. Our cities will be spitting out settlers at an alarming rate and I want those cities connected via road. Many of these cities need immediate irrigation and mine projects as well.

Furthermore, if we clear jungles within our borders Ansar warriors can use our new grasslands to attack our cities much faster. I disagree with the "kill zone" philosophy as our enemy has faster units than us. We need to ROAD the jungles so that we can be move freely within them while our enemy gets bogged down, we don't need to clear them until the land within the valley has been used up, and we no longer fear the Ansar invasion.

I suggest that after completing the irrigation on tile #1, the Arnelos slaves go to the Barcelona #6 and road it. It's a first step to build a road between Madrid and the Spices City.

After some discussion in the chatroom, here are my views on what needs to be done:

Santiago: Jungle cleared at 2, and both of the silk regions. This will still keep jungle in place to slow down Ansar Riders. All cleared areas must be roaded. Some may be mined as well. Also need a Mine at Santiago 3.

Note: These Santiago improvements are not vital to Spain and can be done as workers are available.

I invite all govenors to post to this thread what projects they feel are needed for their cities

                  VITAL PROJECTS:

Road from Pamplona thru forrest, across floodplain (irrigated), and soonafter additional roads through south towards both ivory and spices.

Road from Vigo 1 south, then SE to the iron, then S to Ivory City. Also should include a road onto gems.

Road W of Barcelona, W again, and then S to Spice City. The workers would then develop Spice city with needed irrigation projects.

Road north of Madrid and then north thru jungle towards valley sites that we may want to seize before ND builds there.

Pamplona's #20 tile could stand to be roaded primarily and (to a lesser degree) irrigated.

#18 is another option, but I would prefer #20 -- it can be dedicated to Pamplona's REX needs since it is not in overlap with Leon's WFs.

Roading and irrigating #20 is by no means a high priority though. Irrigation will not do anything to Pamplona's turn around on growth at the moment, and the lack of a road is only costing us 3 gold every 6 turns, but I'm throwing it out there...

                    Thanks.

I ask that Vigo be given some irrigation and a mine.
Preferably irrigate all grassland and some plains. at least one mine after initial irrigation.
I want my city to grow fast, though it doesnt really have much potential

having looked things over it can grow to size 8-9 all depending on how gracious the governors of santiago and Leon are...

We will be building 2 workers with the Palace move from Madrid, I request that both of them be used to mine Madrid #8 and then mine and road the other 2 hills that are on the river in Madrid. I would also like to see Madrid #7 (grassland by the river) Irrigated and roaded. This will increase our Production output and overall Trade and help increase the cities population.

                          [EDIT]
Mining Madrid #8 will allow the palace to be moved 1 turn sooner, without having to Rush the last settler.

On a sidenote, it might be nice to get that cattle bonus near Madrid irrigated eventually.

I may post a wish list for Pamplona here tomorrow for the consideration of the public works personel

Those two new workers from Madrid ... after improving Madrid, can be used to move north and improve the new lands (cut jungle, build roads, etc) to the north of madrid where we have future city sites.
