For which form of government should we aim, and how quickly? Democracy is far away, so I'd like to limit the options to Monarchy and Republic. It turns out that I never ever become a Republic, since the dangers of war (weariness) are far greater than the bonuses I get from increased trade. And that is in SinglePlayer mode! With MultiPlayer, I expect many wars and therefore would like to stick to Monarchy. If we can, get there fast, because the advantages over Despotism are huge.

Monarchy -vs- Republic

We probably will never see the day of republic, if our war plans go as scheduled. We will be getting rich off our neighbor's labor and will take very short breaks in between wars so changing govt may not be a good idea. It may be possible that we can have democratic government way later, but republic isnt an option for me unless we are stuck in an island.:-p

As the unofficial (as of yet confirmed) Minister of War...I foresee no immediate war plans. However, Calc II has other valid points.
Monarchy is best until Democracy comes along. Republic only works if you don't need a sizeable military, and if you're not going to war...I don't believe that either will be the case when playing against humans, who could tend to be more aggressive than the AI.
Personally, I vote for Monarchy, it always works for me and has never let me down. Eventually, I go for Democracy, but I only change governments twice. Once for Monarchy, and once to Democracy, and only when I'm ready."If you're not having fun, then you're losing the game."-Copyright Warrior Poet 11/18/2002 "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."-Tsun Tzu -Don't know when B.C.

I vote for monarchy... unless we are next to legoland, then republic cause they ain't gonna do diddly squat and the bonuses would be nice. I am very rarely ever a republic... always going for monarchy.

It appears as though the general consensus is that we should go for monarchy.
The reasons are obvious and have been stated already, so I won't be redundant.
The 'war plans' are only tentive future patterns of expansion... not like "we're going to build 6 Horsemen and destroy the civ nearest to us whoever it is", or anything to that effect.

Republic sounds more democratic
I think republic is good ,and shouldn't be forgotten, it can be better than millitary police when using luxury sliders.
I normally go to Monarchy first .. and when there are some banks and money coming in (and a relatively peaceful period) I switch to republic, to get a great money boost . Republic can be better than democracy as it dosen't have much war wariness.. when we get police stations we could go to democracy perhaps, democracy would give us even faster workers which is one good thing.
I think we shuldn't worry about government research for a while, concentrate on other things.. then we should go for either republic or monarchy depending on whats closest.
I think we should go for republic still, the WW can be avoided if we don't station troops in other countries and concentrate on defence, then we can switch.. we'd want to have short wars under republic too.
Republic allows bigger armies as the extra trade allows for more units than monarchy (only 2 support per town, 4 per city)
Republic has better anti corruption than monarchy also.
The hanging gardens might be a bonus though, with monarch.
Maybe we ought to plan our strategies into the late middle ages, even considering where we will have aircraft bases/cities etc.
Remember we can use despotism too, its useful for corrupt cities where Slave labor allows faster building.. though this isn't useful for long.
