I had an experience in recent MP game where another human player attacked a city w/a warrior in regular game and took the city. I eventually took the city back, hooked up my iron and went after him w/an elite sword (got help from barbs to make elite). My question is, do we attempted some kind of early rush and how likely is it that another human will try that against us. I'm asking this since since we have to make a decision of how much we will guard our early cities and how we balance unit/settler production so we can expand with potentially exposing ourselves to much.

That's an excellent question for whomever becomes the defence minister and also whomever becomes the minister of the interior. My personal opinion is one good defencive unit per city, with response groups on the parimeter. This frees up resources, while allowing you to defend outlying cities. Also, I generally build a military unit between building settlers."If you're not having fun, then you're losing the game."-Copyright Warrior Poet 11/18/2002 "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."-Tsun Tzu -Don't know when B.C.

I always leave one defensive unit in all of my cities. I even leave a couple offensive units on border towns...fighting the AI on harder settings has taught me to respect surprise attacks."If you're not having fun, then you're losing the game."-Copyright Warrior Poet 11/18/2002 "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."-Tsun Tzu -Don't know when B.C.

I agree, build spearmen from the start. With industrious workers, we will be able to afford them. Occasionally warriors will be built for upgrades if it makes the settler schedule work out better."I used to be a Scotialist, and spent a brief period as a Royalist, but now I'm PC"

I always keep at least one defensive unit my my cities, unless I know no other human players are around and there's no barbs because I never know when a human player will decide to simply walk in to an undefended city.Citizen of the Apolyton team in the ISDG

inner city surrounded by our own cities can be left at two (most MP gov limit) its the border city that needs our attention. If we build pyramid relatively quick and we are settling most of our settlement on plains/grassland/desert (to secure horses and saltpeter) I expect our pop to blow up in combination w/ pyramid. So I expect our inner defense to thin out since we will be making a lot of settlers in the beginning. This is another reason why we need to get horsemen before Swordsmen! (another forum):-p
