  • What tech should we research after Pottery?

Our Enlightened, Spiffor, has decided that our next tech after pottery should be writing.

I don't totally agree with this, and Vondrack suggested that I post a poll about the tech choice.

One of Spiff's assumptions for choosing writing was that we could trade GoW for military techs. This was just before we got the minimap from GoW which proved that our thinking about their location was completely wrong and that we are not likely to meet them anytime near in the future.

Writing, while being a great tech to open up other paths, actually doesn't provide much itself. I am also concerned that getting writing will lead to immediately following it up with some of techs it provides access to such as map making and literature among others while ignoring Iron Working and The Wheel.

I favor balance in getting our techs especially while we are alone. Therefore I favor getting one of the military techs now or immediately after writing. Given the terrain we are in I would favor Iron Working over The Wheel, except if it was to take longer than 15 turns.

Ouch... haven't you voted yet, Sharpe?

I have just gave my vote to Writing (reasons outlined in the Discussion for the Chronicle thread) and guess what I see? Two votes for Writing!

      Voted Writing.

While we could find out that we are alone on an island and need Map Making ASAP, the IW woudln't influence the placement of our cities for a while, as we don't have too many choices so far. Besides, IW is probably top priority for some other teams while writing not, so writing could be a good trading tech.

I was waiting to vote actually - I really haven't made up my mind yet.

I am not completely opposed to writing but I don't want to leave the military techs for too long either.

Boy this must be really adding to my post count!

Hmm... I'm not quite decided between writing and Iron Working. While writing opens up more options for the future, Iron is, IMO, one of the most important resources of the game, and securing two sources (one for disappearance insurance) can give you a real edge.

Of course, that's against the AI. Iron will likely be needed to simply keep up in the Middle Ages, though we at least have resource-free Pikemen.

Which actually means that as far as defenses are concerned, we do not need the Iron resource at all, as Mercs will be replaced only with gunpow(d)ered units. But I will readily admit that Iron would be nice for Knights...

Oh, a pretty lame post, I know... but I need just a coupla more to become a King! Honestly, this demogame thing does miracles to one's postcount...

Voted for Iron Working. While I find all of the arguments for writing very persuasive, I feel that locating at least one strategic resource early should be a key part of our plans. Knowing where Iron is can potentially effect our city placements, infrastructure growth, etc, so it's something we should find out about sooner rather than later, in my opinion.

                  And yes, go post count!

I voted (or will vote) for writing. Our current situations does not require writing. I also believe that we can get Iron Working via a trade. Of course, first we need to find the other civs....so Map Making is very important.

Ahhh....I'm having a tough time explaining this one

It's the NOT virus infiltrating the forum. The nasty virus slips in the word "not" in random phrases. It especially prays on users names with a capital I (or is it a small L).

I will get some sleep because sleeping is not the problem.

Note: This post has nothing to do with the thread or Legoland

When does the our Apolyton title change? I'm referring to the titles of Settler, Chietain, King, etc. I know it's based on # of post counts, but at what number are promotions granted?

I did see that after 500 posts, a custom avatar is awarded.

XVIII) What's these titles under each poster's login? And why some posters have special status?
                            (added with v.1.05, 26/June/99, totally changed with v.2.0, 21/December/99)
Each poster has a status shown under his username. That is depended by his post count, like this:
                            -Settler 1-30
                            -Chieftain 31-100

Note: this system is not intended to rank people in any way. It is only meant to give a "civish" modd on the forums. A few, specific, special posters have their own status so that they are easily recognized. For example Brian Reynolds has a "Big Huge Games President" status.

These small images are called Avatars. They are displayed below your username on all posts that you make. There are two kinds of avatars: those provided by the administrator and those that you upload yourself.
If the administrator has provided a set of avatars, and avatars are enabled, you may select an avatar that best describes your personality.
The administrator may also have enabled custom avatars, which allows you to upload an avatar image from your computer.

Thanks Sharpe for making the poll. I ordered to research writing next, because an order from me was needed at short term, and I didn't think I'd have enough time to poll on the issue.

I think we really don't need IW or the Wheel for now for a simple reason : whatever the place where Iron or Horses rest, the locations of city #2 and city #3 is decided already. And city #3 won't be founded before the next 18 turns or so, meaning we won't have any whoice in our localization decisions before city #2 builds its settler (in 18 turns at the very least, but it will probably take more time, as most people here prefer to build some good units before the settler, making it late for a few turns)
By the time, we can want to use this settler to secure a resource, but this is far from being sure : 1) our land has a poor agriculture, except in the 3 spots we'll occupy; if we find dome good fertile spot, we might want to settle it ASAP. 2) Our scouts may confirm we are isolated on an island. In this case, agressively securing resources would be useless (we'd have settled the whole island before foreigners can come). 3) If we find foreigners, we might want to strategically place city #4 to hinder their expansion.

So, I don't think IW should be our top priority right now. However, if we are to find any neighbour, it should be our top priority for next tech. It will be vital. As vital as finding mapmaking ASAP if we are indeed marooned alone on an island.

lmtoops : IIRC, 30 for chieftain, 100 for warlord, 300 for prince, 1000 for King, 3000 for Emperor, 10000 for deity. Check the FAQ to make sure. And yes, you'll have your custom avatar with 500 posts. Private forums increase your postcount, so don't hesitate to spam here (not too visibly though)
