Thank you, Leo. I needed some encouragement...

Also, they might have just had an incredibly lucky attacking streak, and not actually taken a city. If they won twice as many attacks as they lost, I think we wouldn't like that... but like lmtoops said, don't beat yourself up over it!

A guess of what happened:
They succeeded to break through our sea wall around Abilene and thought that we were defending Abilene only against tanks. They didn't expect to not be able to take Abilene with combined marines + tank forces.
Hence the change in their tone, from initial excitement to the later somewhat pessimistic posts.Last edited by Tiberius; December 10, 2004, 07:24."The only way to avoid being miserable is not to have enough leisure to wonder whether you are happy or not. "

Could very well be the case... then it will be about losses.
Actually, breaking through the sea wall around Abilene was not all that difficult if they put up with throwing transports against warships. They had many empty transports around.
Now they may be left with an untaken city, battered troops, and few transports to carry reinforcements in...
That would be, IMHO, a good moment to talk to them.
Of course, we may be hanging on a thread, having last two 1/4 cavalries in Abilene... in which case, it would be pretty much over...
Dammit... I was not exaggerating saying that I prefer less excitement - I am not particularly enjoying my feelings ATM.

Seems the game is over...
Dear Legoland,
this is a time of both joy and grief for us. We thought we should give you a heads up, before we make anything public.... Legopolis has fallen. More details will be unveiled later, but we just wanted to let you guys know that we feel for your loss, even if we were responsible. We know how much time you invested in building, what we un-builded in one turn time.
Kind regards,
Gathering Storm

I am staring into the map and feel like an idiot. Can anyne tell me, how in the hell, can someone with troops positioned as GS ****ing destroy Legopolis?
Breaking with a handful of empty transports through three 4/x battleships?
Defeating 54 infantries with 60 tanks and 50 marines?
I am lost...

Hm, something has just crossed my mind... and if they did it that way, it was truly brilliant and we lost the war because of our own oversight. Having GoW send them Military Tradition & saltpeter last turn, they could finish few cavalries this turn (a single one would actually do), transport chain them to the newly found fort city, take Quanto - and be done with us.

Must have been it. A 3-mover transport-chained from Stormia. That's why that lonely transport was moved deeper into the ocean. Our city placement was what DeepO referred to when speaking about the lack of predictability.
Jesus, two years worth of my spare time and it ends because of that something did not occur to any of us.
Oh, well. Brilliant move on GS' side.

OK, now we know. We forgot GS could have artillery in those still loaded transports. Unloaded them into the fort city, bombed our BBs down, finished them with transports, took Q.M. - game over.
Jesus, that hurts badly. All those hours and everything's gone because of a silly mistake (we had 3 more ships in Q.M. lined up for repairs - leaving them outside would probably do the trick).
Oh, well. This was definitely the last game of Civ3 I have ever played.

Well, you can't forsee every eventuality; it's just a fact. They had the advantage, and we did the best we could.
I, for one, am proud of what this team has accomplished, and I think you deserve a standing ovation, Vondrack. We came into this game as builders, at a disadvatage to several "warmonger" teams, and we stayed at the top until it took both of them together to take us down. Three cheers to Vondrack, and three cheers to Lego!
May the Brick live forever!!
