  • Navy - naming conventions

OK, after the overwhelming success of my thread on the possible navy naming conventions - 14 posts in just 3 days! - we have so many ideas that we need to choose from them.

Therefore I am going to use something we haven't enjoyed in centuries - a... drumroll... POLL!

It's a multiple choice poll, choose just one option per every ship class, please. I am not including submarines, since it seems we agree on using codenames like UA1, UD4, UQ2, NJ1 etc.

In case the same naming scheme wins for two classes, we will have a runoff poll.
    25
CARRIERS: our own names (Tiberius, Kloreep, Leo M. Toops...)

CARRIERS: historical names (Lexington, Yorktown, Hornet...)

BATTLESHIPS: our city names (Zargonia, Jackson, Panama...)

    I vote for:

    1. The mythical theme:
CARRIERS: mythical God names: Zeus, Posseidon, Ares, etc (or if you prefer the roman ones: Jupiter, Neptune, Mars, ...)
BATTLESHIPS: famous warriors from mythology (Perseus, Ajax, Achilles, Hercules, Theseus, Bellerophon, Jason, Odysseus)
DESTROYERS: famous women from mythology (Amazon, Nymph, Calypso, Harmonia, Invidia (not nVidia ), Iris, Thalia, Phoebe, Phytia, Thetis, Volupta - (I like this one; who doesn't? )

    2. The fun theme:
CARRIERS: Hollywood female stars (imagine our holywood male stars named planes landing on them )
    BATTLESHIPS: Superman, Spiderman, Batman, ...
DESTROYERS: Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, etc

Note: I din't actually vote, as my answer doesn't fit the given options.

Tibi, I would think that choosing different naming schemes for different ship classes would help us quickly and easily see what class a ship in question is... the fun theme would work (though we'd probably run out of really cool BS names), but the mythical one could easily get confusing, since you'd always have to give it a second thought...

Sorry for not covering your "single flavour" schemes, making it easy for you to vote - I admit I did not really see them this way in the discussion thread... if more people miss "their" choice, I will repost the poll with more/different options.

Oh, BTW... as you can tell, I would like to see the carriers named after us, the battleships after our cities, and destroyers after famous characters from the Greek and Roman mythologies.

Well, for the mythical theme it's easy: Gods, warriors and females. However, you are right. You need a second thought when trying to identify a unit. But I find it a cool theme.

I admit that the fun theme is a bit messed up, but I didn't have a better idea for destroyers.

If anything, I don't want battleships or carriers named after us or our cities. I find it boring, but that's just one opinion. Let's see what the others have to say.

If my idea for themes is not acepting, I will vote for one or more of the options eventually.

What we could do of course is have a suggestion thread for every new ship

Or more realistically for every group of 4 ships, or 'class'

Carriers named after citizens, battleships named after our cities, and destroyers named after Greek-Roman mythologies are winning.
