  • Navy coming... we need NAMES!

Just few turns from now, we shall start building our real navy up - I am not counting the ironclads, as they serve as pickets only (and suck ).

I've been using all sorts of really weird names for them (Diablo II weapons made of iron, anyone? ), because historically there were very few real ironclads...

But that should change with destroyers, battleships, carriers, and submarines... I believe I would do quite well with carriers, since I have read and watched a helluva lot of WW2 documentary books/movies, but battleships would be tougher (basically, most all I can recall is the Americans use the names of their states), and I'm pretty much lost when it comes to destroyers...

Can you provide me with some sexy navy names? Suggesting a cool theme would also be great. I would like to name all our modern ships "H.B.S. Something" - like "H.B.S. Ark Royal", "H.B.S. Wasp", "H.B.S. North Carolina" etc. (hm, an idea... what about naming our battleships after our cities? "H.B.S. Zargonia", "H.B.S. Abilene", "H.B.S. Jackson" - that might be a cool theme).

My personal preference would be to use real world carrier names (it just feels right ), use our city names for battleships... and some other cool theme for destroyers. I would use codenames for subs (like U-001, U-Z01, U-Z050 or something similar, incorporating their number, originating city, or some other info into the code). This way, it will be easy to tell what kind of a ship we are referring to just by looking at her name.

But I will happily accept any other fine suggestions you may come up with. So...?

I think city names for the battleships is great

We'll let you handle the carrier names since you seem to be an expert

The code name for subs would be fun, but we also want to make sure they are easy to distinguish. I guess a city-name/letter code would work well.
I make movies. Come check 'em out.

Yes, that's what I was thinking... fortunately, our coastal cities are named quite conveniently to allow for codes structured like "U-C99", where "C" is for the city building the sub and "99" is the number of that sub:

      Abilene
      Castlea
      Dye Fields
      Forkmouth
      Horsefish
      Invoice
      Jackson
      Kloreepville
      Logville
      Panama
      Port Hammer
      Quanto Mechanico
      Sandonorico
      Sharpehaven
      Tiberium
      Tipperary
Crossing (X as in a "cross")
      Zargonia

Port Hammer and Sandonorico are highly unlikely to ever build a submarine anyway (because of their extremely low shield ouput). I guess we will be able to keep the X/Y exceptions in memory, if Crossing and/or Tipperary even build some.

According to this scheme, the second submarine built in Quanto Mechanico would be U-Q02 and first nuclear submarine built in Jackson would be N-J01. Does not look bad, I think...

Actually, thinking about it, we could probably go with just a single number, as cities are unlikely to build more than 9-10 submarines of a given type - and if they do, we simply add one more figure to the code... so those two examples above would become U-Q2 (or UQ2) and N-J1 (or NJ1).

As for the carriers... here is a list of what I am able to recall:

        Lexington
        Saratoga
        Yorktown
        Enterprise
        Wasp
        Hornet
        Essex
        Ticonderoga
        Bunker Hill
        Princeton
        Midway
        Coral Sea

        Courageous
        Glorious
        Ark Royal
        Illustrious

There are numerous Japanese names - but I am not sure if they are "different" enough for us from the Western world (Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Shoho...). Unlikely we'd need so many carrier names anyway...

And there is a whole lot of others - I have found a decent website listing dozens of well-sounding names...

Anyone having an idea for some cool destroyer theme? Hollywood male-stars?

        H.B.S. Sylvester Stallone
        H.B.S. Bruce Willis
        H.B.S. Harrison Ford
        H.B.S. Sean Connery
        H.B.S. Kevin Costner
        H.B.S. Antonio Banderas

Or, we could even go with female stars... after all, ships are "feminine" in English, aren't they?

        H.B.S. Julia Roberts
        H.B.S. Nicole Kidman
        H.B.S. Renée Zellweger
        H.B.S. Kim Basinger
        H.B.S. Sharon Stone
        H.B.S. Jennifer Lopez
        H.B.S. Halle Berry
        H.B.S. Cate Blanchett

This would have the advantage of allowing to refer to the ships simply by their "first name"...

Jesus, what a crazy mood I am in today...

What about doing somethnig actually useful, he? Go, go... we need a map of "emergency bumper zone around Legos". Go make it. Now!

Heh, I'll take the female stars over the male stars for the destroyers.

The sub system looks good, and I don't think we'll have too much trouble distinguishing them

Radek, Radek, what have you been drinking today?

For some reason (I been drinking the same stuff as Radek), I think of Battleships with the name of comic super heros.

              HBS Spiderman
              HBS Superman

I like these! But it could be because of the wine I'm just drinking

                ...or, how about cartoon characters:
                HBS Bugs Bunny
                HBS Popeye
                HBS Donald
                HBS Shrek

I can think of some applicable ship names from RN history:

                  Ajax
                  Achilles
                  Hood
                  Warspite
                  Barham
                  Valiant

                  the list goes on...

However, a naming system of our own should be used I think. I always liked names based on Mythical gods and constellations like:

                  HBS Ajax
                  HBS Orion
                  HBS Medusa

I think Battleships should have significant names, names like Indomitable etc.

Following from standard Royal Navy naming conventions, we could name Destroyers after geographical locations/cities, Battleships would be given a famous name from our History (or we could ressurect famous BS names from RL history), Carriers should hold the historical famous names (In our case we could name them after ourselves) and subs could be given code names as mentioned like 'HBS Little Red Riding Hood' or something silly After all, we will be denying their existence

Hm, mythical names do not sound bad - and there's a lot of them. I guess they'd fit well with destroyers, as those will be plentiful, I imagine.

Naming carriers after ourselves is not a bad idea either. There are still a number of us active on this team. I'd say that we would hardly need more names...

                    HBS Zargon (or HBS Haddock)
                    HBS Leo M. Toops
                    HBS Kloreep
                    HBS Redstar
                    HBS Tiberius
                    HBS Vondrack

...and there are few more members, which could have their carriers as well, despite fading away over time.

Dunno why, but I would somehow lean towards using our city names for battleships, not destroyers...

I am going to wait few more days for more ideas and then.... :drum-roll: ... post a poll!

But as Tibi said... this IS fun - for everyone, I guess. Fun that does not require one to stare into the save for half an hour just to become ready to have some (wicked) shield-shuffling "fun".

Though, I admit I've been enjoying the building period time a lot, but that's probably because I am so deeply engulfed in this game and know almost everything by heart. I have to confess I just don't have the will and time to dig through the ISDG save like that (so I never even open it)... I imagine other guys here feel likewise about this game. It's no fun to shuffle all those shields and optimize like mad unless you do it every turn and can actually see the results... when it's like an orchestra playing together.

Anyway... it always makes me happy to see that people are still frequenting the forum. It encourages me greatly to continue with turn plans, chronicle reports, and an analysis here and there.

I know it's not all that exciting to just build and build... but the better and more efficiently we build now, the more fun it will hopefully be when we eventually get into a war.
