  • Threat Assessment of the other teams

Just thought it might be an idea to post a thread to have an open discussion viewing which civs post the most threat to us.

My ranking from least to most threatening is:

    5) Vox - the least threatening civ for us now - mostly due to their strong friendship with us, but also their vast distance and being among the least developed civs in the game also make them the least threatening to us.
However, their failure to gain much ground so far in their war with GS is becoming more dire for them.

    4) Role-Players - Their latest city building to the north (especially when they have plenty of land to the south) might be further upsetting their relations with the other Bob civs, plus I get the general feeling that no one really trusts them due to their lack of committment to signed treaties (eg Lux and Bob defensive pacts). Plus many of the civs will soon be lusting over their luxuries - and with RP seemingly trying to get deals always in their favour (remember our defensive pact discussion? and trade discussions? also some of the discussions by RPers (especially Togas) in the ISDG seem to reinforce this), they might favour military action to get the luxuries over any trade. Generally, unless it is an act on the part of the other civs, no one seems to like RP.

    3) NeuDemogyptica - They seem to have stalled their city building - which might mean a military buildup. Plus the increasing lack of space left on Bob makes them more of a threat. However, RP's continual creeping northward (despite having plenty of city locations in the south) is probably making ND especially upset (unless the latest city was agreed to in a treaty). However, their lack of ports makes them less of a threat to us.

    2) Gathering Storm - They are a serious economic and productive rival for us rather than a serious military threat at the moment. It seems that the Vox-GS war may be turning in favour of GS - Vox has to capture some cities soon or else GS will simply overrun them with units due to their greater production capacity (plus the advantage of their immortals is nearly gone with GS now likely having Med Infantry's). However, like Vox they are far away from us (though a bit less so with them having The Lighthouse) and still seem to be relatively friendly.

    1) Glory of War - They still seem friendly, but their close proximity to us, their mapping of our coastline, their large amount of ports and relatively large number of cities all make them a serious threat to us. Their only downsides are their poor territorial situation (lack of land and that most of their cities are relatively close to ND) and their lack of iron (though I wonder if that is still the case). Their settlements on Mystery Isle are too close for comfort and they have uncovered about half of our cities by their mapping. Their eventual lack of space will (like ND) force them to look elsewhere to expand and there have always been rumours of a ND-GoW alliance which would be worrisome for us until we match their combined size (which may soon be within sight). Their slowness on approving that favorable tech deal is troubling as well.

I would suggest that we might want to propose a NAP with GoW for 30 turns and hint at the possibility of an alliance. Should be interesting to see their reaction to such a proposal as it might provide a clue as to whether they are friend or foe.

Also GS's latest trade proposal might open a door to reestablishing good relations with them mostly to cover our rear in case Vox does begin to fall in their war. As far as their trade proposal goes, we would need a Sistine or Bach agreement before we could accept it and to also see where the GoW agreement is at. I grow suspicious at GoW taking such a long time to put something in writing, especially for a trade that is so lopsided in their favour that it makes me wonder if GoW is trying to stall us getting those military techs for some nefarious purposes.

Agreed with most your post, Steve.

    Few notes:

    1) the GS-Vox&Co. war, though definitely different from what we had hoped for, is not "turning in favour of GS" yet. Mostly because GS are, as usually, losing on the diplomatic front. Almost everybody is more or less supporting Voxes, two teams to an extent of committing troops (yes, that's what I was told). It seems that the world placed the bets on Voxes - and cannot afford to lose...

    2) the relations between us and GS have never truly soured - officially... It was just us knowing we disliked them - but we never expressed that in front of their diplomat or even indirectly by ignoring them or turning impolitely their proposal down. We managed to keep our involvement in the war secret so far, I believe. Their latest trade proposal only reinforces my belief that GS have little idea about how much everybody else tries to get rid of them. If they are thinking about future research goals right now, when the second wave of 25 immortals gets moving and combined forces of Voxian allies slowly take their positions, then... well, the war shall last long. Keep in mind that though GS have managed to hold their positions, they have been unable to counterattack successfully... and once their GA is over, they will be at a disadvantage, building full-fledged military units, unlike Voxes that will be building just warriors for upgrades).

BTW, speaking of this war and its slow progress... I am beginning to think that this is even better for us than a quick, decisive Voxian victory. The longer other teams fight on Estonia, the longer we can peacefully build and grow stronger.

One way or another, I believe we can feel quite safe at the moment, sticking to our pretty much balanced building approach. There is little chance our switch to Republic should be troublesome... only 4 more turns to go!

      Hi Radek!

Good to hear that, I guess it is just me getting nervous -by thinking that Vox is taking a long time to conquer any of GS's cities, plus GS getting a leader out of the war. Good to hear that most view GS as a long-term threat to the point of supporting Vox.

I agree that a longer war might be useful to us, except if the Bob civs turn on us as then it would be better for us to have a solid ally in firm control of Estonia. But admittedly it does look like it could be a long war due to GS...
