  • Some of my best friends are archers

If we have a chance to start a war with another civ early we should!

If we consider archers expendiable remember this comparison:

    3 archers 60 shields 6 offence 3 defence
    2 swordsmen 60 shileds 6 offence 4 defence

I know it's not a perfect comparison, but there's also surprize value to starting early etc.

    Here's another: build a city:

cost 30 shields: no net increase in people working a square.

2 archers 40 shileds but we add the pop of the city.

That's worth the temporary unit cost: In the long run, we're ahead.

but 2 cities grow faster than one, and being able to build two things at once is an advantage, if we hesitate to build cities now for archers we won't be better off in the long run

EDIT: though i do agree with you that we are going to eventually have to start building an army, i just think we need to build a few early cities first

I'm not a big archer fan, I tend to fair better with chariots and then horsemen because of the 2 tile movement.

Also, Horsemen will upgrade to our UU, Archers upgrade to Guerilla.

I should have been more specific, I meant once we get another at our borders AND have our roads set up, we should attack immediately.

Korn,I admit I've made a rather elementary mistake here, 2 towns with +2 food will gain 2 pop in 10 turns and 1 town will gain 1 pop in 10 turns.

I'm playing my first diety level game as the Persians, huge Panagea map. I researched Iron Working, and was unable to find Iron, (a neighbor has it, but I didn't know that until I'd committed my troops to another war). I had 2 cities producing 10 & 7 shields - 5 archers built every 6 turns. In about 6 turns I've gotten 3 cities, and anticipate many more in the next few turns. Its around 2000 BC and On the demographics table, I'm near the top of most categories, and no longer have any unit costs. I am behind in technology, but that will change too. It would be better to have my Immortals, but that can wait for the next war.

I won't make the perfect the enemy of the good.
