  • Who of us are actually Warmongers?

I keep saying that I am a builder, however, I have been increasingly impressed with how sucsessful the wars of Apolytonia have been. I have actually implemented a more aggressive play style in my SP games.

Anyway, I want to know what kind of play style each of us are so we can best use our talents to maximize our abilities.

I generally play very conservative and use an almost socialist stragety. I usually get a set amount of cities (normally an Island or a small continent) and I fight with waves of swordmen to destroy any other civs on my Island. I normally will concentrate on colonizing the entire Island before I start building. once I do start building, Its with marketplaces first. I will purchace the cheapest one as soon as I can and continue to buy each improvement until every city has one. I do this with each city, so they all improve at the same rate.

However, since I joined the SP DG, I see myself fighting against any opponet that I have an advantage over (ie: sword against spear, Knight against spear, cav against pike or like with the Persian Campaign, anytime I have a resourse advantage). I am still very hesitant to fight on level ground (Archer v Spear, Knight v Pike or Cav v Musket). I hate to loose units. I am also not very good at navel combat and subsequentially never build Marines for amphibious attacks. Latter on in the game, I might make a good Emperor, but not to start.

I tend to be an EXTREME expansionist, my sole purpose in the early game is to build as many cities as I can and stake out the maximum amount of territory and then rapidly connect all my cities to one another.

Once, I have my borders staked out I begin building and preparing for war.

i love to hammer any and all of my close by enemies in the early game, and get my civ some building room, then after that i like to build up and just engage any civs i bump into, my Standard Operating Proceedure is to raze virtually all cities i capture, and use the slaves to build up my infrastructure, i will capture the occasion far away city and build a barracks in it to refresh my troops

It depends on what the definition of a warmonger is exactly... I guess I am somewhat, but I make lots of time between wars to build up my infrastructure. I tend to be expansionist, building only settlers, until I am completely surrounded, and then I build up for war with my weakest neighbour.

The MOST I ever wait between wars is 20 turns. And that is only if I either need more units for some reason, or I actually care about rep that game for some reason. Only bad times are when I have no one to attack...stupid island maps.

              whats a warmonger?

i usually engage in early swordsmen / horsemen wars. i overlook the "archer rush" more often than not. during apolytonia's demogame, we found ourself mostly resourceless (there were horses near our capital but we didnt have the wheel), so the archer attacks were neccessary.

anyway, i like the early horse/sword war. i usually try to have a varying army. i often play as china, so the horsemen->rider upgrade is usually planned well in advance with a tidy sum of gold in the early mideval era.

i'm a fan of the poprush, and i usually go despotism -> communism, but i sometimes throw a short stay in monarchy in there. as i play china, the non-religious trait REALLY deters me from having unneeded revolutions. Plus, unless you have well developed cities, you're army support costs more, undoing whatever trade bonus you attained.

i'm a big fan of manifest destiny, but then again i usually play on archipeligos or small continents. if we end up like we are in the SPDG i won't be advocating it so early (remember my first campagin for SMC? Manifiest Destiny Pan-Apolytonia were on the platform).

as i said, early wars are a must. it's simple math when you think about it, really. assume the worst (land wise). assume your enemy is REXing. 1 city begats 2 cities, 2 cities begat 4 cities, 4 cities begat 8 cities, etc. chopping 1 or 2 cities early on slows down the REX like all hells broken loose.

as for city structure, early on i usually have 4-5 "core" cities, good production, decent growth, decent trade (i pride myself on being #1 in production). i usually have a small main worker army (usually only 3 or 4). somewhere near the core cities i'll usually have a "pop city", which is great for settlers / workers, mainly workers. this usually happens with some wheat or a floodplain, and the city enters servitude until i think i have enough workers

away from my core cities i have "border cities", which are usually corrupt until i get courthouses, and they have large garrisons (3 troops, probably need more in MP, say 5-6), walls, barracks, the whole shebang. after the groundwork is laid down for my distant cities, they become worker producing cities until i can get a courthouse there

remember, more cities = more free units. i dont ICS, but it's been known to work. should we petition the UN for some anti-ICS measure?

Actually, now that I think about it, I am slowly becoming more of a warmonger. My strategy is mainly one of a scientific warmonger. I try to beeline to great military techs, such as leadership, and motorized transportation. I then build up an invasion force of the new unit, and blitz the technologically inept masses. This strategy is very effective (I play alot as the Germans).

My strategy usually is to take over several other cives then build after knights into the industrial age. At that point I have a few short wars with calvary, before making way for large tank armies. Usually in a much pruned world I either will go for diplomatic or space victory. However, if somebody keeps me from wining the vote I make sure they don't stop me again.

I usually colonise very agressive in the beginning and build up an early army. Then I concentrate on building roads and city improvments. Maby participate in some smaller wars to expand terretory a bit, but usually try to improve wealth abd keep out of trouble. Specially if i dont got a slight science/resourse advantage.
Despite my peaseful nature i usually have a quite large army. Also I try to switch to monarchy/republic as early as possible, then goes for either Demo or Communism.

because china is an industrial civ, i try to force in some workers in my building scheme. it also helps to keep your population in check (playing emperor+ you start having problems @ 6 with 2 garrisoned and a temple /w no lux), and in the middle of swordsmen, its nice to throw a worker in there.

I fight wars when there is an advantage. I would normally call mayself a "Pragmatic builder" and I usually play against 11-15 AI,BUT,against humans, especially the warmongers who played in the Demo game, war seems to be the best plan.

I play random standard maps at Emperor level.
My usual strategy is to have 3 core cities
1 has strong growth and produces settlers
1 has strong production and produces warriors
1 is placed in a strategic position..(Lux or resource)

                            Pump out warriors..explore
Bring them home, get iron working, and upgrade to swords for a sword rush on all neighbouring civs.
(Thanks to the C3DG for that strategy)
I take over their cities before they get any culture and fill in any gaps with my own settlers.

I am almost always at war throughout the game, continually pruning the strongest civs as I go.

I usually bypass archers, and beeline for Swords, Knights and Cav....Games are always finished before tanks are invented.

(I rarely deviate from the above, but have been known to adjust to circumstances..In my current game, My ottomans were cut off on a peninsula with only 2 cities & no iron...I went for the archer rush, and took over 6 german cities over 2 wars...(20 turns of peace in-between)

                            war-war-war-WAR !!!

However... not sure is the same strategy will work with smart human players...you can guarantee all of our neighbours will beef up their border defenses. Therefore I agree that if we can snag the pyramids & other wonders, we can declare a wonder denial war from all of our builder friends.

                            My top scores:-
                            http://www.geocities.com/hot_enamel/

Chinese are my favourite civ, and works best with the above strategy. My game is won during the rider rampage.
