  • Standing orders for workers:

Our number of workers is getting high enough that giving orders for every detail of each worker's operation is starting to get out of hand, and the situation will get far worse as time progresses. To cut down the hassle a bit, I'm going to set the following standing orders for workers so that with plains, flood plains, and grasslands, only movement orders will be needed in most cases. (There will, of course, be exceptions from time to time, which will be noted in the turn orders.)

    Edit on April 5, 2003:

    1) When a worker moves onto a new tile, he starts roading. (Exception: if more than one worker is on a tile, juggle the numbers to avoid wasting turns from having too many workers work on a road.)
    2) After roads are finished, workers mine mountains or grasslands, or irrigate plains or flood plains.

Pretty soon we are going to have a lot of Workers. For the next 10 or so turns the standing orders look good in most cases, but once the number of Workers gets higher the order needs to be swapped around.

Unless the tile is going to be used right away (basically within 3 turns of the Worker moving onto the tile) and needs to be irrigated, roads should supercede the mines or irrigation. That way the turn after the road is complete, other Workers can come in and complete the irrigation or mine with teamwork. Roads should be built by lone Workers whenever possible of course.

In the case of mines, we will often be able to complete the mine on the same turn it would be otherwise (2 turns to road, then 3 workers to mine in one turn), except it will have a road. For irrigation, we'll have those tiles irrigated and roaded quicker (on a tile by tile basis), but there are cases where the irrigated tile will be used in the 1 turn window we leave open which would demand irrigation first.

The sequence of terrain improvements should be a little more focused than it would be the other way around.

Ok with me. I added a link to this thread to our turn thread template.
