  • Membership Request: Lawrence of Arabia

I've just received L of A's descriptive paragraph, so the process can begin.

Lawrence of Arabia wishes to join our team, Gathering Storm.

A word from Lawrence of Arabia
    Hi guys

I was asked to write a short paragraph about myself, so here goes.

This is me, L of A. I wrote an article on REX, play civ3 on Monarch level, and in general tend to bring in a different perspective into things. When the general consensus was that the expansionist trait sucked, I was on the other end of the opinion. Now, people are warming to my argument. The only strike against me seems to be that I have an Apple, and therefore cannot actually play the world.

I think that I will bring in a different perspective to the demo game: one which is fresh, new, and unexpected for the enemy. Even thought I do not have PTW, I can formulate a strategy based on what I see and hear. I will now let you into a little secret: when I first coined the term REX, and wrote about it, I didn't even own the game. I've done it once, and I can do it again.

    Thanks for your time

    L of A
    Voting
Returning to the issue of veto, I propose that any new member must pass a poll, with a twist. Some groups use an interesting approach known as the black ball. In these groups when a membership issue is voted on it is done so with a box containing marbles. There are many white balls and a few black. Each member in turn reaches into the box and deposits a ball into a third compartment. When each has done so, the contents of the third compartment are examined by all. If the deposited balls are all white, the applicant is accepted. If there is a single black ball, he or she is rejected.

That sort of system works with a small number of people. It ensures that no one is forced to coexist with someone completely anathema to them. It does require that people be reasonable and not petty with their choices.

If we do this, then we would post a poll with White, Black, Abstain as the only options. A single Black vote would deny the application. Abstain would have no effect. People granted admission would see the forum and see the number of voters. People denied would never see it.
Vote White if you'd like to see Lawrence of Arabia in our team or do not object to this.
Vote Black if you have very strong reasons for not wanting Lawrence of Arabia in our team.
Vote Abstain if you have no opinion on the matter or don't care.

If after 48 hours there are no votes for Black, and assuming that a reasonable number of people vote White or Abstain, then Lawrence of Arabia will become a member of our team. A single Black vote would deny entry.

    The poll is expired.

I don't know what my vote is gonna be, but I do like his letter..

Better say it here too, let's put him on hold for a weak....
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Hasn't he been on hold for a bit already?

In my current, less sober state then before, I don't have the malice that I had earlier at work... white, because I'm in a good mood and I have nothing better to base my decision on.

Hell I'm no one to be claiming others are of "no use"

I'm not used to hearing that much blatant self-advertisement, but interesting enough to draw a white ball from me nonetheless. He's also someone I've noticed around before, which helps. (And I'm assuming if there's a good reason to black-ball him, someone else will do the honors.)

I agree... plus I think it's cool to want to join a team perfectly knowing it will be a year (if at all) to be able to see what all the fuzz is about.

Oh, one thing: he coined REX? I thought that term came from Vel... at least he was the big advertiser, IIRC. But my mind is getting foggy when it comes to mega threads over a year old

I'm fine with Lawrence of Arabia, too, but our team is getting rather large. Then again, many members do not post at all, so having another voice should not be a problem. I'm going to White-ball him.

Dominae, regarding this matter, I think it's time we start PMing inactive members and tell them to either get active or lose their membership status.

Shiber, I was thinking the same thing (but was too shy to mention it...). I guess we're going to work on the honor system and assume that ex-members will not leak any information?

Shiber and Dominae: who of our team is really inactive? I know of just one: Vel, and consider him a honorary VIP member, who doesn't have to post, but just gives credit to the team by enlisting (irl these members either are politicians, or pay a larger memberfee... maybe we need to PM him anyway )

                        Dominae, good point.
The unpleasant (but perhaps necessary) solution would be to start a thread of ex-members in the PtWDG forum to alert the community which players have left / were removed from a certain group. Then we make it illegal to accept people who were previously members of a different group.

Another thing: what if we offend someone when we remove him from the team, and he'll go and spill the beans on our plans or compromise our screenshots?

Well... again... if I count, only Vel is inactive. We have a few members who don't join us often, but those are no burden, and they do post more then once a week. Let them stay, I trust them no to spy for someone. Who we do want to get rid of are all the groupies, who can't access our forum anyhow.

                            Your forgetting about Soren

If people want to wear the chevron, there is not much we can do about it.
How many active members do really have btw?

Where can you tell from the team listing which members have been accepted and which have just "signed up" but are still waiting approval?
