  • PBEM game

Sir Ralph and I want to get a PBEM game going.

5 humans. 3 AIs. same settings as we are going to face. Just to see how it goes.

Who's up? We need the reply with attachment feature here first (quicker than email). But it would be good excercise.

Why reply with attachment? That's a big waste of disk space, poor settler. (Yea, I'm an old-school programmer, from the time where memory and mass storage space was scarce and resource wasters like C#/.NET and Java impossible, thank God )

We should start it next weekend, and all agree to a time where we're all up and playing. The savegame could circulate by email really fast. If we all are watching, I think one turn in about 10 minutes would be possible. Making a 4-6 hour session could push us 25..35 turns ahead, that one day.

Good idea, I haven’t played any MP yet (well in high school I did get a beta of Civ 1 MP, and did about half a game of hot-seat, but I don’t think that counts), I have to admit I’m a bit nervous . I really can’t commit to a 4-6 hour period, but if you don’t “need people to sign up now” (I understand if you do) I can see what happens.
Note: I’ve also been having some problems with my home Internet connection (I’m at work now, as I generally am when I post), which, if acting temperamental, could interfere with the timing. As I understand the game starter can boot people from the game and continue playing with the rest. If this isn’t true I probably shouldn’t play, as I’d hate for my connection problems to end the game for everyone 4 hours into it.

Randolph: This is supposed to be a PBEM (play by e-mail) game. Connection problems aren't an issue.

oh yes they are when your connection fails after passing 300-500 bytes of data. You do need to be able to stay connected long enough to download a save file. Also occasional download speeds of <1kbs (although rare), would impact the time.

That's godawful, you really should consider to change your provider. What does vt mean, Vermont? They can't possibly have such a bad infrastructure there.

              Yup, Vermont.
As much as I’d like to blame it on my provider, I think it has more to do with my system (although SoverNet is far from great, but it’s free for me so I can deal with it). My computer came with an network card (for living in the dorms using the University connection), and I installed the Modem myself (after moving out of the dorms). It’s some super cheap off-brand modem, so I’m not sure if it’s a problem with the modem or my setup/instillation. Of course the general problems with SoVerNet don’t help.

              Well there’s my rant.

--->doesn't happen often, so use it well

Why not make small teams( not a mini-demogame)

So when someone posts the save, one of the active team-members could do a turn.
this can speed things up heavely IMO (afterall the object, is not to win, only to familiarise)

hmm, since this pbem, as long as one of the team members has the game. You We could still join IMO

It has gone from dislike to annoyance to anger and is now moving to threatened militant action (deleting the game, destroying the CD, destroying the computer). My response to these threats thus far has been to calmly state that I’ll replace whatever is destroyed.

The strange thing is she’s really not “that type of person” at all; she just seems to have some terrible aversion to computer games and particularly Civ. I think she may see the game as competition, it almost seems like a jealousy response. Women ()

                      Well enough of that

                        It is jealousy, believe me

                        Sound familiar?

take her out to diner, buy some flowers, that's the only way to handle this

OK, back to important things now

I'm very tempted to join in on this PBEM game, just to see how it works, but I fear that time is an issue. Not because of RL necessarily, but because I'd rather concentrate on what we're doing here rather than start a new game with new strategies and goals, etc....no matter how short it ended up being. My focus is on this team and how we're going to face our competition...

I don't know whether to consider it a blessing or a curse that I'm single and have all the time I want (and no girlfriend to be throwing my computer out the window or threatening my existence).... sounds like I should consider it a blessing...

May none of you with significant others be subjected to brutal torture, mind games and otherise unhappy times because of PTW and our upcoming game....

Of all my friends, there are only two of us who are really into computers, and his girlfriend sits and plays Starcraft and Red Alert with him, Lucky Bastard I always say. The lucky ones are the ones who can play against their girlfriend's online in whatever game they want....hmm too bad world conquest doesn't appeal to women as much. Maybe that's a good thing too though.....

I guess I should throw in a few thoughts. NYE and me intended to have a little game with almost the same settings (5 humans, 3 AIs), possibly even with the same civs, in order to do some testing and may be strategy adjusting.

We do not, I repeat not, want to make a big competition or even a second DG out of it. We want to make it cheap, so that we're always a bit farther in playing than the DG is. I'd even say, we can freely comment the game here in the team forum, for all of us to learn. So please, don't overcomplicate it. No teams etc. We need 3 volunteers to join and let's get this thing running this weekend.

For my fellow Europeans: PBEMs have the charm, that you can have more than one at a time. So I'll be glad to start another game, when you become "available" .

                              Ok?
