Heh. I asked the same question in another PBEM I am in. Essentially the same. The answer came back that it helps the next player know a turn is there, and helps to identify problems in transmission. 'Sent the turn'... 'No you didn't, send it again. I didn't get it.'

Dear Diary:
I feel it has been ordained that I must lead my people through trial and tribulation before we may find the Promised Land. Yesterday alva fell out of a coconut tree and was badly injured. He seems to be mending though.
Today we struck off through the hills after the plebes reported that it looked as if the cursed land stretched to another sea. Hopefully the plebes will be able to catch up.
There are mountains coming up in 100 years. Maybe I will climb one to see if some divine spark can be found to guide us.
