  • Poly hall of fame time

My feelings about this ritual are ambivalent. I got in on a technicality of the keeper not knowing how to count.

However, I tire of seeing people gloat about how their group is 'organised' and the regulars of other subfora should get their act together.

Here are the people who might stand a chance of getting in based on current vote totals. The first three are the leaders going in.

    1. Samson- {34} [26] (41)---101
    2. Kramsib- {37} [30] (32)—99
    3. DarkCloud- {26} [30] (37)—93

    Master Zen- [26] (20) (36) 4—85
    Theseus- [12] (25) (35)—72
    Dominae- [4] (19) (27)—52
    Togas- [16] (20) (11)---47
    korn469- ---- [11] (16) (9)—36
    MrWhereItsAt- [14] (16) (4)---34
    Beta- [14] (3) (10)--27
    Arrian [4] (12) (8)---24
    vmxa1---[3] (12) (8)—23
    Frustrated Poet- [5] (8) (6)—19
    vondrack- [3] (10) (2)--15

What say you? Do we fancy creating a slate?

Theseus is near in, and Dominae is not far behind. Both are ideal candidates for being pushed up. Keep in mind though that it could take two elections for Dominae, and maybe even Theseus. After that it will take at least two elections to get anyone else in.

I have a soft spot for korn for all the work he did early in the Civ3 storey (the list, Blitz mod) who along with many of the people I have listed are solid Civ3 personalities. Arrian, vmxa, and FP go without saying, being teammates, but some of the others have been worthy friends and sometime foes.

What do you think? Letting this sink like a stone is a perfectly valid option.

Edit: Have PMed Ming a link to this thread to make sure it is kosher.
Edit: Removed a couple small bits on advice of Ming.

I don't know... I'm not so happy about these kinds of popularity contests. The hall of fame has long ago stopped what it should have been: a list of people which actually did mean a lot to this site.

So if there is going to be a concerted effort to get one of the guys in, let me know, and I will vote. Otherwise I'll just pass.

I usually alternate at least one vote for either Korn or Snoopy, both people who's work has been undervalued, I'll be doing the same this time.
My second vote was going to go to DeepO and my third for Aeson, who surprisingly is still no voted in either.

I'll hold my vote for a couple days to see wether Theseus gets in and vote accordinly.

          Damn good point.

          Who deserves to be in?

If we can agree on that, we can make it happen if we are persistent.

Bah, thanks for the support, alva, but really... I don't deserve the hall of fame. My work in the strat forum has been limited, and long done, I rarely visit it any more. And I don't think that being a turnplayer should give you any extra votes...

            Thanks, but no thanks

who deserves to be in? I don't know... both Aeson as T are good candidates, as would our other members be who are already close on the list. I'm not going to vote for Vondrack out of sympathy for the last turn, but there are other reasons why he could be up as well. The same happens to MZ.

I think that me being in before Aeson is a bit of an injustice. Yes, I have had my place, and I have fought my wars, but I have never done anything close to 'oh, so cold' and I doubt I would ever have the patience or ability to do anything like it.

I got in because I was front and centre and in the faces of many of the people who actually turned up to vote. Oh, and the keeper couldn't count. However, there were threads in the ISDG demo game that the vote was on. That got people to vote. Many who voted were familiar with me as an old curmudgeon. I got in.

That is the lesson. If we feel that someone is worthy, we can push him or her up to it.

Who is worthy, and on what basis? I gave only one criteria, those who are close. Who else and why?

strangely enough, one criteria still is popularity.... even if that is exactly why I don't like this list. I'm more familiar with some of the older strategy guys (many of which are in this team), so I prefer those over ones I don't know but which might have done more.

One other criteria should definately be the will to help others. I think that's where Theseus (and vmxa and Arrian) have their greatest merits... other than Aeson I don't get the feeling it's about being innovative, but they certainly helped most people (what I could see, again, I'm not so regular in other parts of this site anymore). You see that same kind of attititude in here, btw.

I agree with the willingness to help others. I think the existing votes for the one known as RPDOS, and Arrian reflect that. Catt also had a small sum before last election. No one voted for him, so they got wiped.

On that vein, alexman got in last vote. One of the most revered civ2 posters and member of the hof is Xin Yu, who never tired of figuring out how the game worked and explaining it to others.

I think that being a helpful member of the community is almost required as an on topic poster.

I'm not too keen on this beauty contest. There are many who are certainly worthy of respect, but I think people can form their own opinions about those who have assisted or inspired them.

Anyway - what criteria are used? There are many stars - either helping people, posting strats, running AU games, deriving in-game formula, and unlocking the secrets of the game.

Many hard-working DG-ers have sacrificed their public profile for their teams, and some people have done the opposite. In fact, before I joined GS, I used to wonder where many of the strat regulars and their great articles and discussions had gone. I got here and found out. Since then, I've not played nearly as much SP, and certainly have not had the time to make the contributions I would have liked to the strat forum. The same will apply to others.

For me, the authors of "So Very Cold" and "When you should not mine shielded grassland" (I forget the exact wording) stand out, and not just for those masterpieces, but I think everyone should have their own private 'Heroes of Apolyton' rather than an official list.

I voted for Beta, Dominae and vmxa1 this time 'round. I tend to pick 3 civ-3 types each time. I've voted for Theseus in the past, but on a whim decided to vote for Beta this time. It is, after all, just the 'poly HOF (translation: it's nearly meaningless).

I voted before seeing this thread, but I voted for alva - he must be so embarrassed to have even less votes than me.
If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.

And if I had noticed that Aeson was't already in I would have voted for him - I guess I just assumed he already he was. He damn well should be, I think SVC was the most influential thread ever posted in the 'poly civ3 sections.
