I vote Macedon. Rome is not a challenge comparitively -- just stay out of war with the greeks for a few decades, get your tech on, and force the carthaginians to fight the celts and the goths and whatnot -- and you're in. Macedon, on the other hand, is quite a challenge, with a not weak Persia on the east and the challenge of attacking Rome as early as possible while still keeping Persia at bay.
That, and the fact that Macedon still has plenty of opportunity to grow, and more combat than any other civ, leads to a fast and furious game ... with lots of choices to debate. You'd spend the entire first 30-60 years debating when to attack Rome; you'd spend the early decades discussing how to easiest put Persia out of the running for the long haul so you can quickly attack Rome; and lots of debate on where to grow north, which barbaric civs to war with and which have at peace.
My second choice would be Rome, and my third Persia; but Persia is not as ... interesting, and Rome as I said is somewhat boring. Carthage and Egypt are not as competitive and slower to advance, Carthage particularly has the problem that Rome attacks it first (and is always at war with it).
Barbaric civs like Celts or Goth sound vaguely interesting at first, but they're much smaller and less useful, and I don't think you could realistically win the game with one of them on any decently difficult level.
so ...
GO MACEDON!!!!!

I like your SNOOPY POSTER! - While you Wait quote.
While Persia might not be so interesting in MP, with Rome growing, it's a bit different in SP. You see, the AI doesn't know about Rome's potential, so the Greeks wage an all-out war exclusively against Persia. They can even manage to bring in Rome and/or Carthage, if you're not careful. And Immortals really suck against those 3/3/1 Hoplites.

AI: I sure wish Jon would hurry up and complete his turn, he's been at it for over 1,200,000 milliseconds now.
This is a difficult choice. Snoopy makes a good point about Macedon, jon an intersting idea to play the barbarians, and Oct's proposal does have nostalgia going for it.
BUT - this the Rise of Rome scenario. And Rome has lots of roleplay possibilities.
As the saying goes. "When in Rome ..."
Sincerely - Optimus Betamus, Senator and Roman.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.
well with you around there is always the exception
so yes we can play the banana
we will make you the minister of trade - a banana long appointment
so to you it then does not matter which civ we are
you can just lay back, peel a bit of skin and do up a bit of a sundae every now and then with ya trade deals
Like I said
