Okay, that works. Now we just need to clear up this pillaging issue, and ban it.

I'm not so sure it needs to be banned. There would be serious reprocussions for anyone who started doing it. Not only would the landowner targetted be pissed off, but so would probably everyone else as it makes all of our positions weaker.

We should be able to start embargoes if we want!

Alliances will be formed quite quickly over this. And at the same time deep rifts between us will be caused. I fear that not only will pillaging cause our Mayan civilization to be defeated quite early on, but also will cause some to quit over this. Not to mention the large amoont of animosity that will grow between members. Is it really worth the game dying over?

Seriously? This is a feudal game, if people are going to quit because other people want to win, they should not have joined in the first place.

No one can do well in the $feudal game if we lose to the AI. That's pretty simple. We lose the lands, we have nothing.

So part of every landowner's decision making process will have to include the health of our civilization as a whole as well as their own standing in that civilization. I would assume everyone here is smart enough to understand that and plan accordingly.

Exactally. And this is all the pillaging will accomplish.

But why would anyone do it then? Are you saying you would choose to do something that will destroy all chance you have to play? Or are you just assuming the rest of us are a bunch of idiots incapable of determining if pillaging would be beneficial or not to our own cause (which must include the common cause)?

Fighting between lords is one of the best parts of a feudal game! If I own half of a city, and we have decided that the majority of production of a city gets to choose whats built, pillaging Farb's mine might swing that vote to me.

Yes, it weakens us as a civ, and many people would not resort to that unless something *really* swayed them.

                    And besides, the AI sucks.

No citizen owns them. They are the property of the city they are assigned to until that city decides to auction it off. Its up to the Town Elder of the city as to whether they want to auction it off.

Can't the mayority of a city decide to auction the units off too?

The original concept is that each tile you own in a city's radius gives you 1 vote for the Mayor of that city. And the Mayor is the Despot of that city.

What happens in the case of a tie? (ie. everyone votes for themselves as mayor of the town(s) they're represented in)

Ohh.. will that change when we switch from depostism? It would be much more intressting if you got to vote on each matter... and the town elder was more someone collecting the votes and running things that hadn't been voted for....
a little more work would be need to put in, but it would open up for more political manouvers... just a thought tho..

                                Two Despots? Sparta style.............

Who says there are no politics in this? I assume each City will have Elder elections at specific intervals (typically monthly). And votes could be gained by promising to have tiles improved, units built, etc.
