  • Operation: Wild Blue Yonder

From the desk of the Supreme Military Commander

As of the last few months, we have enjoyed technological superiority over the rest of the world, and boast the most enlightened and skilled scientists anywhere in the world.

The military, in a top secret project entitled Operation: Daedalus's Wings, have been developing vessels with the capability of FLIGHT.

In it's earlier stages, we funded several independant projects, mostly by inventors, mechanics, etc, who have looked to the skies and vowed to fly one day. Now, that capability is in the palm of our hand.

We have the capapability to send people into the skies above us, skilled pilots who traverse great distances not only roads, railroads, but in the freedom of the skies above us.

Two units are able to be constructed:

Fighter - a small, single-engined (and occasional two-engined) propeller plan capable of carrying a small amount of bombs, to be dropped on the enemy, but is a fast, manueverable unit mostly to be used in support of THIS unit:

Bomber - a testament to the power of our production capabilities, the bomber is a massive steel fuselage with wings, capable of carrying a devastating payload equivalent to our ground Artillery units, and can serve as our main weapon in the skies.

We shall be needing Airports, buildings and runways similar in theory to our Harbors, but instead of holding ships, they shall hold airplanes. Airports help us to develop veteran air units, and have the added benefit of allowing us to transport ground units from one location to a far distant location.

I, along with Sgt. Roadcage, submit these design plans to our Senate and Domestic Ministry, in hopes that this idea will be recognized as beneficial to our security and power.

    Discuss please.
Former Supreme Military Commander of the Democratic Apolyton States, Term 8
Former Chairman of Apolyton Labor Party

How many of these "flying machines" will we have on alert over our cities? 3 fighters per city? 4 perhaps? I belive when this Tech is in the hands of our enemies we should develope and strong Stratigic Aerial Defence Plan. We need extra figters ready to respond Fast incase any city become vunerable..... with new posibiltes for weapons come new dangers.

Will we refuse to trade this tech, or any other weapon data for that matter in the future?

I think we should have 2 fighters in every border city. Inland cities should have either a bomber or a fighter, ready to be shipped to hot spots.

I disagree, we should have much more fighter coverage on border cites! 3 at the least. If we get bombed by other civs they wont think one raid will make the point.... the bombs will drop again and again.

I'm talking 3 fighters on superiority missions, and nothing but superiority missions unless it is abousoultly necessary to send them to help ground troops. However taking fighters away from homeland city protection sould be avoided at all cost!

Yeah, I typically like having 4 fighters on superiority on my borders, but then I typically more heavy air power than I suppose most people do (and I do more building in my industrial age than conquering... waiting to conquer until I get a whole bunch of tanks and some marines).

For Apolyton and at Emperor level... I guess 2 fighters may have to do until we can get some more improvements done... our infrastructure is still lagging behind

air power is the force of the future. We cannot afford to strech air forces thin in our country! If we do People will die, our citzens and troops, our infrastructure will be destroyed..... cities set back many turns! Again I STRESS the making of a VERY STRONG Stratigic Areial Defence Plan

                Strategic Air Defense Plan= SAD-Plan!

That should be the official acronym!

Also, I agree, the more units, the better, but there are limits. I think the 2 fighters on boarders should be minimum - but 3 fighters is better.

Rubbish. Civ III is leant heavily towards ground warfare. Fighters stop nuisance bombings, but thats all it is, a nuisance. Real military might is still held in ground units, particularly tanks.

I agree with Panzer in regard to the number and location of fighters. Use them for Air superiority only. Use Bombers for assistance with ground troops where artillery usage is not quite as pratical (i.e. more than a couple of turns to reach firing range).
