CHARTER OF THE DEMOCRATIC INDUSTRIALISTS OF APOLYTON - by Thud

    Section I: Preamble:

The People Of Apolytonia, wishing not to be denied their Unalienable Rights, Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Wealth and Happiness, hereby organize this political organization, The Democratic Industrialists of Apolytonia. The nation shall have her rights entire, and her liberties inviolate as long as the Democratic Industrialists of Apolytonia safeguard the land against bloodshed and tyranny. We have witnessed a series of horrific wars, and this party shall not allow the deaths of our brethren to continue. So it is that that we here, with the publication of this Charter, highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation, under The Great Banana, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

    Section II: Leadership:

There shall be four (4) DIA leadership positions:

    1. The President: The President shall be elected by public mandate every 2 months, or within a week of the previous President stepping down. Should have responsibilities of directing short-term policy, encouraging party activeness (i.e. via PMs to party members), establishing policy threads, chats, and manual polls when necessary.
    2. The Vice President: The Vice President shall be appointed by the President. In the event of the President stepping down, the Vice President will act as Interim President for the 1-week election period. The Vice President will assist in encouraging party activeness, establishing threads, chats, and polls, and advise the President.
    3. The Public Relations Officer: The PR officer shall be a volunteer posting, appointed by the President but not required to hold any set term. The PR Officer will be responsible for maintaining a good outward appearance, promote DIA interests in the forums, and do other Public duties.
    4. Government Liaison: The Government Liaison shall be appointed by the President. The Government Liaison will assist the government of Apolytonia in any capacity, as described Section III, and attempt to encourage Minister Policy to meet our goals.

    Section III: Long-term policy:

    1. Concentrate on and encourage internal development, overseas exploration, and domestic expansion, as well as development of technology and trade resources.
    2. Avoid war, unless this interferes with the first objective in a critical and unavoidable manner.
    3. Attempt to achieve long-term allies in order to foster trade, and supplement our nation's defensive situation.
    4. Aim to achieve Space Exploration or Cultural victory.
    5. Aim to increase cultural, trade, and science spending over military largesse.

Section IV: On Disbandment and Continued Activity:

Possibly, much organized political opposition may evaporate. In this case, the DIA should retain the above policy, and continue to be active, but change stance so as to be supportive to government operations and help ensure the smooth running of Apolytonia. In short, we may be forced to adapt to a one party political climate, but I believe that if this occurs, it will be short lived regardless. Future technological advancements as well as additional government types supportive of war, and yet maintaining a decent economy, i.e. communism, should create circumstances where new political parties will form, which will not share the DIAs peaceful outlook.

    Section V: Public Elections:

In order to direct the Apolytonian people in an apt and acceptable manner, and accomplish our goals expediently, the DIA hopes to support a candidate for every Ministerial position during elections. DIA members who wish to run under the DIA party platform are strongly encouraged to do so.

Democratic Industrialist Platform for the Industrial Age

(mostly written at the start of the Industrial Age)

      Anti-Imperialism

The Democratic Industrialist movement has a long history of opposition to imperialism. From its very inception through an alliance of several anti-imperialist parties, The Democratic Industrialists of Apolyton have long held that wars should only be fought when they can be demonstrated to be within the national interest. Beyond that, the Democratic Industrialist movement has long argued that domestic industrial development trumps reckless warmongering. In the founding speech of our party, Timeline outlined this belief as such:

"We support giving ourselves breathing room when necessary, but acknowledge the superior concept of taking full advantage of what we have, here at home, rather than greedily pursuing things which can serve us no benefit. We believe in industrializing our cities, and investing in culture and science, these are the accomplishments that will shape us into a towering nation above all other civilizations of the world."

Those words were spoken when our great civilization was still in the Ancient Age. We are now in the mid-Industrial Age, in the 13th Century, and possess a monstrous 47 cities. As we approach the optimal number (64 cities), corruption will become increasingly prohibitive (it is already quite excessive on our western frontier). If we have cities that are close to that number in relation to both the Palace and the Forbidden Palace location, corruption will be so atrocious that we will even be paying more money for the upkeep of our occupation forces in these cities than we will ever receive in taxes, science, luxuries, or other benefits (not to mention the cost of necessary improvements in these occupied cities). As such, imperialism, though many argue it has been a cornerstone of Apolytonian achievement over the ages, is quickly fading as a means for our civilization's continued vitality and growth. Where before there was at least a tension between imperialism and domestic development, imperialism is quickly losing what little lustre it once had... leaving domestic development as the only sensible option.

Though we recognize the need to defeat major rivals to our hegemony such as Germany, there is no need for imperialistic expansion in our future. Once Germany has been felled, our hegemony will be secure and only fools will choose to challenge us. Where such fools exist, we will teach them the price for challenging us, but we will not have need to conquer them as the lesson - for additional conquests of primitive territory will only serve to weaken us. Indeed, our empire is already the world's largest and continued expansion will only serve to weaken the unity and cohesiveness of our mighty republic, a republic whose resources would be better spent toward industrial development. The calls by imperialists for the subjugation of the other regimes on Abananaba and beyond are not only amoral, but foolish as well.

      Democracy

The Democratic Industrialist movement has long been a defender of democratic principles. The party was originally formed as a reaction to the anti-democratic domination of government and decision-making by leaders of the since destroyed Imperialist Party. Many, anti-imperialists as well as independents, joined together with the Democratic Industrialist movement to insist upon the following of the democratic principles upon which this nation was founded in ancient days. Though our nation has strayed from that path at times, the Democratic Industrialists of Apolyton have been instrumental in righting the path through the republican and democratic movements and the continued defense of our democracy. In doing so, we have helped our nation to cast off the chains which long held it down - those of the ancient barbarism of imperialism and authoritarianism. We now walk out into the light of truth.

For, in the words of the poet Khalil Gibran,

"Yesterday we bowed for kings and bent our necks before emperors. But today, we kneel only to truth, follow only beauty, and obey only love."

It is the position of the Democratic Industrialists of Apolyton that our democratic form of government is sacrosanct. We will act forcefully to oppose any change in form of government. As written by Timeline in the founding statement of our party, we are "staunch advocates and defenders of Democracy, .. determined to prove faithful to the people." As long as our party remains a force in Apolytonia, we will fight to defend our democracy from those anti-democratic forces that would wish to destroy it.

For the coming term, we promise simply, as the founders of our party did so long ago, to "forge a new presidential administration that respects the people, and values them for what we ALL are, human beings, equal, none better than another of his fellow man." For, in the words of one of the ancients, "instead of looking on discussion as a stumbling-block in the way of action, we think it an indispensable preliminary to any wise action at all."

      Industrialization

The advent of the Industrial Age only augments the need to focus on domestic development over reckless warfare. Those nations which are wise enough to forgo excessive military conflict and focus diligently on industrializing their cities, sanitizing their water supplies, building ever-greater institutions of learning and commerce, and constructing enormous industrial wonders will become the masters of the modern world and the victors of the great competition of history.

It is the position of the Democratic Industrialists of Apolyton that our nation should maximize the productive potential of every city in the Republic and should utilize the maximim amount of that productive capacity possible to provide clean water, modern medical care, modern education, reliable banking services, modern transportation, and modern communication service to as much of the people as possible. In doing so, our nation will be greatly strengthened in culture, science, the arts, and industry. This amazing strength will be what allows us to surpass all possible rivals and to become the undisputed leaders in science and industry for the whole world.

We must abandon the ancient and barbaric aspects of our history and wholeheartedly embrace the modernity of the coming age. Our people will be freed from ailments and barbarisms which have long plagued all peoples of the world throughout the history of humankind. Our cities will be as beacons of progress and modernity to a world still awakening from its ancient and cruel past. If we follow this path succesfully, it may ultimately be the place of our civilization to - quite literally - reach for the stars.

      Abolition of Slavery

Simply put, slavery is an intollerable afront to the enlightened principles of our great nation. The Democratic Industrialist movement stands against such barbarism as we have always stood against barbarism and evil.

Furthermore, the record of assimilation of foreigners to Apolytonian cultural norms has proven to be remarkably successful when foreigners are integrated into the urbanized workforce of the nation. There, in our temples, our schools, our libraries, our cathedrals, and other Apolytonian cultural centres, they learn about the superior nature of Apolytonian culture and become willing converts to the enlightenment of Apolyton and the grace of the Great Banana. Forcing them to continue toiling in the fields without pay has additionally forced them to go without the benefit of a highly valuable Apolytonian edcuation. This must stop.

Lastly, it would be more efficient to have a small number of natives do the remaining jobs for workers than a larger number of foreigners because we only serve to deprive ourselves extra population by using the foreigners as workers. The argument that the finances matter is hollow because we currently are at 100% science and our income is still enormous. Additional income from technology sales to other nations will only serve to raise our income. The miniscule expense for having the necessary small worker force will be minor in comparison to the income we would deprive ourselves by not joining our massive number of foreign workers to our cities.

For both moral reasons and practical reasons, slavery must be done away with at the earliest opportunity.

How are you pro-Industry and anti-Imperialist?

"We believe Industry should make money, but they should NEVER expand. New products bad, charging more for the same products good."

Your anti-Imperialism policy means you will oppose our government attempting to encourage foreign nations to allow our companies to sell product and expand our nations exports.

Its borderline treason in my opinion as it means this party OFFICIALLY discourages exports and business expansion.

              Discuss.

In light of the Palace move during the last portion of term 7 : the corruption and waste sections may need to be modified.

(It's already excessive in Uber Island and southern portions of Classical Apolyton, and acquiring more cities that are closer to the Palace than those regions corruption in those regions. In addition, cities in the lost civ & westernmost fringe of the main contientant would be so hopelessly corrupt ...)
