Upgrade to 1.29?

Just figured it was time to ask the question again. About 3 months ago it was asked, and three people indicated they could not upgrade for various reasons. Now that PtW is out, and most people have the ability to upgrade to 1.29, just figured I would ask again. It would make the demo game go a bit faster and easier IMO.

Additions v1.29f:

* Editor: Added a new flag to terrain types to be able to set whether or not cities can be built on a particular terrain type.
* Editor: Implemented city placement. You can now add, delete and edit cities. When a city is placed, a unique name is automatically generated for it. City art will match the era of the player it is assigned to.
* Editor: Implemented mouse cursor feedback. If the tile under the mouse is invalid for the current brush type, the invalid mouse cursor is displayed.
* Saved last scenario loaded in .INI file.
* Editor: Updated Tile property sheet to work with starting locations.

* Editor: Added "auto" check box to city properties that will cause the city's name to be automatically generated when the scenario is loaded into the game. It defaults to ON if the active player cannot access city names (i.e., they are a player with no civ assigned) and OFF if the active player can access city names.
* Added the ability to rename units if they produce a great leader during combat. The player is given a popup to name this unit.
* Added error handling for scenarios with an incorrect number of difficulty levels, eras, espionage missions, experience levels, worker jobs, terrain types, and world sizes. The player will be given a message and the game will exit.
* Editor: Added various interface enhancements.
* Editor: Added ability to import BIC data from other BIC files.
* Added an '*' next to experience level name for units that have produced a leader.


Changes v1.29f:

* Editor: Changed the rename unit confirmation message to only be displayed if there is no corresponding folder and .INI file for the new name.
* Disabled tutorial mode when using custom rules (due to a number of problems/bugs).
* Sped-up world builder for generated maps.
* Circular leader heads used in civ3 are no longer hardcoded.
* Fixed crash that occurs on the city screen when a city is connected to more than 8 resources.
* Editor: Changed context menu to support cascading popup submenus for the many delete options.
* Editor: Renamed "Restart Players" game setting to "Respawn AI Players".
* Editor: Renamed references to "Terraforming Improvements" to "Worker Jobs".

* Removed the water restriction from terraforming so that all terraform types are now based on the terrain type (except for forts).
* Changed city code so that a road/railroad is not placed under a city if a road/railroad is not allowed on the terrain type the city is built upon.
* Editor: Changed territory calculations. This will cause existing scenarios to have slightly different territory display in the editor only. The territory display in the game for existing scenarios will be unaffected.
* Changed Military Advisor to evaluate armies based on relative strengths of units as opposed to number of units.
* Changed air units to ignore movement costs of terrain types (this will only have an effect on air units without the Immobile ability).

I heard once that when you begin a game with 1.21 and then upgrade to 1.29, some errors might occur. Is there any truth in this?

NO repeat NO!!! Upgrading to v1.29 now would be like ....cheating

Let me explain: The major difference between v1.29 and v1.21 is research requirements.

v1.21 holds human research requirements constant across difficulty and divides that rate by a difficulty level factor for the AI's.

v1.29 holds AI research requirements constant across difficulty levels and multiplies that rate by a difficulty factor for the human.

For advanced difficulty levels, and Emperor is such a level, v1.29 makes climbing the tech mountain much harder for the human, but much easier to maintain tech dominance once it is achieved.

We have already climbed that mountain so switching to v1.29 would make our victory hollow.

I'm in agrrement with Roadcage, don't upgrade now, wait for the next game to upgrade.

Under 1.29f at the Emperor level, it would cost 20% more beakers to reserach all techs across the board.
This would be just enough to cause us to be not quite finished reserarching Atomic Theory when Theory of Evolution is built; wasting a ton of beakers.

Upgrading any time after Atomic Theory completes would be a major cheat, because it also costs the AI 20% more to reserach under 1.29f and we will have a 3 tech advantage.

I will withhold my vote for now. I WANT to Upgrade to 1.29 because I can not play PTW without the setup program installing 1.29. If I can have a dual install, I would support staying with 1.21, but untill we upgrade I can not play with my xmas present as I am the FAM and need to run 1.21, I am limited too my options. If anyone knows how to dual install 1.21 and PTW let me know so I can vote NO.

Rename that Civ folder (or not, you can just paste it in a different place), then patch the original game to 1.29. Then, install PTW normally. Make a shortcut to the civIII executable that you left in the old directory (the one you renamed), and when you need to play the Demo Game, you just call it by that shortcut. I had my dual install in this way. AdaMada has a thread about it... Let me see... well, I couldn't find it, but this should work.

Don't upgrade to 1.29..Do that for Next game..(this is from someone from has 1.29) It would suddenly screw up everything we have timed like ToE because of tech rate changes among other things...
