  • City Councel: the value of Coastal Fortesses

Now that we have Metallurgy, we can build Coastal Fortresses.

In my personal game, I like to use these for 3 reasons:
    1) they have no Maintainance Cost
    2) they are cheap to build
    3) they do provide some protection against offshore bombardment.

As most of the cities that could build them, currently are getting themselves up to "modern" standards, these would have to wait a while to be placed in the Q.

What's the general consensus of the population about this Improvement?

If there is nothing better to build, including updating and expanding our military, OK. Otherwise, I usually see them as a waist of shields. PtW on the other hand is supposed to have corrected this by making it activly shoot at even passing enemy ships. I have not yet had the chance to test that out.

I don't really see a real need for them. There are better uses for shields, whether it's building more military units or building more useful city improvements.

They would be highly useful against human players due to the tendency for humans to actually consider shore bombardment... however, I've rarely EVER seen the AI use any form of artillery bombardment other than a few pieces of artillery in their capital city and other metropolises fortified...

Since we're playing v1.21 and this is a single-player game, it's unlikely that any of our cities will EVER be bombarded...

I higly doubt their usefulness, unless the AI has a massive armada of medieval ships (I've read a Firaxian saying that CF are good against medieval ships).
If not, I'd rather not build them... Now that we have economy, even wealth is more interesting than CF

Do not build them in this game. Why? See above.

Until I see a ship beyond a Galley, we don't need these all that much, but I certainly take the advice of the Ministers, and as soon as any of them judge it necessary, I will follow instructions as ordered.

We’re powerful enough that we can rule the seas, let’s not let ships get that close to our cities

Coastal Fortress aren't particlary useful in single player games.

I used to build them all the time in my own games, then dropped them down to when nothing other than wealth was adviable (and I wasn't isn't in a military unit at the time), now I never build them.

In my games the only costal fortesses I use our the one's I've captured. I don't build them, I see them as a waste of shields.

                      1) If there's no other reasonable city improvement AND Cavalry is no longer useful, I'd build them, otherwise they cost too many shields to be worthwhile.
