  • Slider Folly

First off, let me say that it gives me no pleasure to say this. In another thread, we had an ongoing discussion about where to set the slider.

I made the point that as long as there are two AI research engines to drive and two AI commerce engines to fund, all essentially at top tech parity, it was futile to try to out research them until such time as we have infrastructure superiority.

And everybody poo-pooed my comments. How with a 50% science slider, our jungle infested under libraried cities were sure to beat the AI's to Democracy. We are in a golden age after all!

In order to let reality set in, I suggest readers open and examine the 870 AD save file. Where to look first, take your pick. I first noticed it on my favorite advisor screen, good old dependable F3 hot key. Now just why would Germany, Greece, England, and Rome be in Anarchy? Hint: Government change. The hairs on the nape of my neck stand up as if on parade as I quick jump to the diplomacy screen. I chat up Bismark, and sure enough he has tech and money! The butterflies in my stomach turn into a gut wrenching spasam as I notice Alex, Liz, and Julius all have that same tech.

Only 5 turns have passed since that previous discussion, but our cash horde is down by about 40%, we've done only about 20% of our outstanding military upgrade bill, all the AI engines have Democracy, and we are still several turns away from the prize.

Berlin and Athens remain the goal. We simply cannot allow the peacenicks to stand in the way of their forcible downsizing any longer. Hawks of the world unite! We've got cities to sack and booty to grab. Join for the plunder of it all.

An Apolytonian empire stretching from conquered France to the coastlands of the English and the island of Zulu, with territories stretching through the Greek nation and the Germans...beautiful.

Sounds good, but I am willing to settle for clinching victory by sacking Athens and Berlin. Once that is accomplished, the peacenicks can take as long as they like to build their spaceship. This will make the UN a game critical wonder because I am certain we would loose the vote!
