  • How to tell time ..!

    Hi,

I noticed that the "GMT" notification at the bottom of the Apolyton pages is actually an hour off.

    I get:

All times are GMT +1 hour. The time now is 22:32.
    Apolyton Time is 16:32.

    while http://greenwichmeantime.com/ says:

You arrived at Greenwich at: 20:32 GMT.

The notification should read (for my time zone - middle Europe): "All times are GMT +2 hours".

This is because of daylight savings time. Notice that the UK is actually on +1 GMT now because of this!

So - to calculate the time at which a chat session starts, better go to the offical website of Greenwich. DO NOT try to calculate it from Apolyton (until they fix it).

Thank you for letting us know. I had seen that on other sites, but hadn't checked to see if it was an issue here. Next month, once DST is over with, time will be accurate again.

This should just about be stickied.

At the very least put it in the guide.

No, it will not, it is wrong now (one hour a head) and when we start our DST it will be one hour late I think

For informational purposes am I correct in thinking that

          4pm GMT = 5pm UK time = 12pm EST

Also what is PST (I think togas is on this)

If people can post their timezones and how they relate to GMT I can include them in the time/reports thread.
          Are we having fun yet?

            PST = EST - 3:00

You are confusing Eastern Standard Time (EST) with Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). This wouldn't be important if it wasn't for Indiana, which is *always* on EST and never moves to EDT (the rest of us are on EDT until the end of October).

EDT is GMT - 4 while EST is GMT - 5.

So OPD is partially correct in that 4 p.m. GMT *is* 12 p.m. Eastern Time, just not "EST" (rather EDT). As I said above, this wouldn't be important if it wasn't for the poor people in Indiana who might get confused :-P.

The other state in the U.S. that doesn't use daylight savings time is Arizona, which always remains on MST (GMT - 7), rather than moving to MDT (GMT - 6) part of the year.

As for Pacific time, it is Eastern time - 3 hours, but they're currently on PDT (GMT - 7), not PST (GMT - 8).

For a quick reference, here you go:

Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) = GMT - 4

Eastern Standard Time (EST) = GMT - 5
Central Daylight Time (CDT) = GMT - 5

Central Standard Time (CST) = GMT - 6
Mountain Daylight Time (MDT) = GMT - 6

Mountain Standard Time (MST) = GMT - 7
Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) = GMT - 7

Pacific Standard Time (PST) = GMT - 8

As for Alaska and Hawaii, Alaska is GMT - 9 and Hawaii is GMT - 10, but I don't know if they use daylight savings time during part of the year or not.

Some use daylight time, others don't. It's one big mess

It's a good thing there is no "Daylight Time" advance in Civ 3

I just wish that they would get rid of DST. It really doesn't apply for the kind of country that we are today, i.e. more industrial/commercial that aggrarian(sp?).

Arizona and Indiana don't use Daylight Savings Time? *sigh* What's wrong with those Indians?

I suggest we give the Daylight Savings tech to the Iroquois for free...!

Middle Europe is GMT+1, but we are on Daylight Savings Time now, so that's GMT +2.

Ok then here are the time summaries if you havn't put your time down then do it now and i'll put it in the times thread with these. In particular I'm interested to see what time Shiber is on.

                          all times relative to GMT

                          PST -8
                          PDT -7
                          MST -7
                          MDT -6
                          CST -6
                          CDT -5
                          EST -5
                          EDT -4
                          ARO -3 (Brazillian time)
                          GMT
                          BST +1 (OPD time)
MWIA +12 (lol you're way out, New Zeland time)

Is this correct? Anyone else? Which of these times are not in use?
