  • Trade with the Russians-(Apolotonia becomes Expansionist)

This requires effort, but assuming we have a galley left over we could invest a settler and establish a trading post city at the location shown. Build one road on the hill and a harbor in the city and we gain an iron resource, and instant trade with the Russians.

Potential trade with other civs as the AI likes roads but rarely builds harbors where they will open trade routes. The cost of building the trading post will be gained many times over in the sell of dyes, and even the sell of iron.

Strategically, we become the trade link. Your civ goes to war with us and trade routes are severed. Any luxuries cease flowing. Cities go into chaos. Muwhahahahahhaha!

I routinely do this in my games. The AI's refusal to build harbors bugs me to no end.

Interesting, if a little longterm. We have not only to free and use the ship, but also a settler and a Spearman. Also we must build a harbour, which will either take a long time in this corrupt city or some short time after we finally go Monarchic. Once the French war is done, we must make as much money out of the luxuries we have as possible, and this sounds like a good way of going about it.

Back to the ROOTS of addiction. My first missed poll!

You and me both. I feel like I'm their older brother guiding them along and giving them little bits of help to keep the game going.

        MWIA-

Even if we just go down there start a harbor for one turn and buy the rest of it. We could give it to the Russians and still have trade. They're just too stupid to build a harbor themselves.

          Hmm...
Yes, this looks like a sound plan. However I doubt the city planners will approve the construction of a settler for this since they think filling in the gaps left after the French campaign is a higher priority (and frankly, so do I).
To sum up I like your plan and I'd like to see it carried out after we're done filling-in the gaps within our own territory.

          Btw, kudos on the originality!

It's an excellent idea. We'll need a temple at least, to prevent the cultural flip.

I'm hoping there aren't any gaps to fill. We could sacrifice the trading post to culture flip (the harbor would still be there) and we get Chartres, Rheims, and Munich from culture flips. 3 settlers would cost us the combined poulation of 2 Core cities as the three aformentioned cities are "untakeable" only razeable.

I agree, though I would rather keep it. It may not be very productive for us since it's so far away from our capital but it'll be very useful to the Russians.
By the way, I suggest that we make two trips with the galley: one to transport a settler and a veteran spearman to the Russian shore and another to transport a worker and possibly another spearman. The worker should begin working on the road immediately and once it's done it should join the town to help speed the construction of a harbor and later a temple.

We don't need to sacrifice it to culture flip. We could GIVE it to the Russians, who would a) like us more and b) become stronger because of it. In fact, we should probably build some stuff in there so they get a good city.

Well, it would have an iron resource...........
                    and a shield producing grassland.

I propose naming it "Port Vodka"

                      Don't hold your breathe.

Munich maybe but I wouldn't be prepared to wait. As for Rheims and Chartes I can't see that happening at all.

Even if we were to build more cities right on the edge of their borders it would still take an age.
                      Are we having fun yet?

Oh I'd rather wait for them to hit size 2 when we can take them instead of razing them. Then the settlers proposed to fill the gaps could be used for something more useful.
