We have already voted for the audacious plan Gold, but one part of the plan now seems in danger to me, or perhaps I am wrong.

The French have thus created a new city on the coast, south of Orleans. Our plan calles for the insertion of 4 swodmen on the mountains to move up close to france, to attack it and have both it and either Chartres, or Orleans (I forget which) in one turn. Unfortunitelly, Rouen stand right in the path of this proposed invasion, plus Orleans has gone to two, and I think that it wil be a three or more by the time of our attack (at which point hopefully France will not have pikemen). We don't want to cause ourselves a major diplomatic blunder in this war, so, can plan Gold work as proposed with these new facts, will we bite the bullet and drive our reputation to hell by moving on a civ Polite to us for a surprise strike, or, will we use the 10 swordsmen we plan to have, instead of making a delicate and masterful plan, simply avalanche against french forces that will be much weaker than ours (the French have a puny military now, they won't equal us in 20 turns even with thier production bonus).

What if we built more units so we could take Rouen as well? Also, would it be possible to land our units outside their territory, get them to declare war on us (or declare war on them unless they meet our demands for the cities we want), and then attack? Technically, does the AI consider that to be a 'sneak attack', if you formally declare war and then attack that turn? I understand what you're saying about being able to beat France in a war of attrition, but I think that'd be counter-productive overall -- it seems like our general objective is a lightining-quick strike against France and then suing for peace a few turns later; serving to expand our empire, give us further room to expand, but leaving France between us and several other civilizations.

    Any thoughts?

Thank you for seeing this new development and letting us know. We do need to consider how this new twist affects our objectives for Plan Gold and plan accordingly.

      I am against sneak attacking.

The key to avoid sneak attacking is to not have any units inside their borders when you declare war.

This isn't a problem at all.
We move the galley to the tile southeast of Rouen. The units can then land into the tile east of the galley and straight into the mountain chain.

Looks like we'll be ending a turn with units in their territory but then moving them out a few turns before we declare war. Will this damage our rep?

Am I correct in thinking that if/when the French demand we move our galleys that they won't automatically move back into our territory as we haven't had units in their territory before?
          Are we having fun yet?

READ MY LIPS: NO SNEAK ATTACKS

i would rather spend 10-20 turns extra building up a larger force, than do a sneak attack, or risk a loss.

Absolutely no sneak attacks. The short-term advantages are nothing compared to the long-term disadvantages of carrying out a sneak attack.

Isn't using one galley a bit of a waste? I can see two or three, but one galley costs too much, as two swordsmen aren't a potent force.

We're sending two galleys. AFAIK we're planning to start production of the 2nd galley next turn and before we reach the iron deposit.

Yes and so far we have produced 3 which are currently stationed in Termina.

However, those two would be moving ahead of the other Swordsmen, meaning that the enemy would be alerted and able to poprush some new defenders, making them worse than useless.
