    As I posted somewhere else

I posted this in another message, but I also think we should concentrate on our own continent. The island is roughly 5-6 squares away, so there is a definite risk that we will lose a galley loaded with settlers for *no* reason. I think that is a risk we should not take at this early stage. We should focus on our continent and expand to the north east (after war with the Americans).

Please forgive my little screw up on the map. That should read *north east* not north west By expanding this way, we come into contact with quite a few dyes plus iron deposits which we will definitely need. We know the Americans (thankfully) don't have iron, but we will need to get it at some point, and I think producing settlers to work our own continent rather than gamble for an island we may not even reach is a much greater benefit to the nation.

Well, I too agree we need to cement ourselves onto this continent before any overseas endeavours, but we must keep our options open. We surely cannot ignore the possibility of much needed resources being present on Uber Isle. As it is we will see a helluva struggle before any reward here - it will be worth it, but if things don't go swimmingly and we instantly grab the resources and population we need to support our armies - we're screwed.

I say leave the Isle be for now, unless there is some unexpected surplus production or unit somewhere, but check it out once America is near finished and before we go fo France. By then it is likely we'll need more than what we will have for this offensive (eg IRON), and exploration of Uber Isle may provide that as a last resort. Let us put it aside, but keep it in our minds.

It seems to me that Uber Isle could be our Argoth, a land of riches and opportunity that will turn the tide of history, or a possible fall-back position in the event of disaster. We won't know unless we check it out.
Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

WhiteBandit - Uber already came up with a solution to that problem. We send one galley across. If it doesn't make it, we send another, etc. Then, when one galley is across, we take the settler and load it onto another galley still at the mainland. Then we wait a turn. We move the mainland galley as far as possible. Then we move the settler on the first galley to the second galley. The settler's safety is completely assured.

Yes, but in a worse case, it might take a few galleys until one makes it across.

By the way - would you actually move the settler one tile, or just load it onto another boat (on the same tile) ?

We'd move it a tile. We would likely lose ONE boat, (at least Uber assures us), so we'd be spending 150 sheilds and 2 pop (3 galleys and a settler).

dont forget it may take more than one galley to get there.

i'd also like to point out that galleys could get us to the dye/iron sites faster. perhaps we could build one for that purpose and then use if for uber isle afterwards?

seems like a reasoable comprimise to me.

edit: i do want to reach fragrant valley quickly though.

Actually I like Uber's idea of using the galley to transport to the iron/dye sites. That would get us over there faster. I think once we establish cities around those resources and luxuries, it may be a safer risk to start exploring. I just think at the moment we need to focus on building cities and expanding on our own continent, since it looks like we have a tough fight ahead.
