  • Unofficial : our tax - science slider

There is a debate going on : should we keep our tax rate at 100% ? This poll is intended to get your feedback on thhis issue. However, given time constraints before next turnchat (thursday 21:00 GMT), this poll cannot be made official.
I will post an official poll after the turnchat, with up-to-date info

I suggest you to think carefully before voting. Our minister of science, civman2000, pointed out that giving 10 % to science would only cost 1 gold per turn, and will have merits. Hower, our Supreme Military Commander, UberKrux, pointed out that all the techs are likely to be discovered by foreigners (and acquired by us) before 40 turns.

I just summarized their position. I think they'll explain their views better than I do. I also suggest to anybody involved in this matter to voice his opinion.

that's hard to read. or is it just my civ3 special light interface?

I opt for either 0% or 10%. either is fine by me.

I think that I am right in thinking that a tech is cheaper to buy the more research you have done into it yourself. This being the case, does anyone know how much? Basically, i don't think we're going to get any techs through research at the moment. However, if half the research on a tech will reduce the price by more than 20 gold, this will be worthwhile. Anyone have a feel for this?

I agree with mtgillespie, it seems the A.I can tell what tech we are reaserching, and how far we are away from discovering it. For example, the turn right before you are about to discover a tech, go and see what the cheapest price you can buy it for is. I can almost guarantee you can get it for under 20 gold ( this could be wrong on higher difficulties, i play on regent, there might be a difference).

I think 10% would be the right amount of money to invest into our science program. Slow and steady, not enough research to actually discover the tech, but enough research to cut down the price.

10%...cutting down the price is definitely worth it, and who knows, we might be able to get a tech ourslevees.

10%, I agree. I'm not sure my vote is entirely rational. In fact, it's probably just my old Civ2 habits, dying hard. I am impressed by the effectiveness of tech buying and whoring in Civ3 (this game, and stuff on Apoly's Strat thread, have been very eye-opening), but there's a builder deep inside of me who can't let go of the idea that I want my civ learning something.

I believe we cannot tech whore forever. Eventually, our funds will not be able to match the costs. If we research a single tech before anyone else, it will be worth a lot in trades.

Setting the slider to 10% only costs us 1 gpt now. In the future it might cost us a lot more. By changing it now, we base how we run with the 10% draw already in place.

We have been managing well with out current GPT and this change will not current effect it. We will be receiving one more gpt next turn from an expired debt.

                    It's just all around good.

I also would like to point that we'll get 1 more gpt next turn, as our debt to the French will end. these 10% science are virtually free.

Tech whoring is self-sustaining. We sell it to other civs, so we get the money back and more besides.

I agree with most people here: 10%
The GPT drop isn't much at all, and as Spiffor mentioned our debt to the French will end next turn, effectively negating the GPT drop to science.

I'm curious: does this continue to work in the middle and late stages of the game (when everybody is in contact with each other)?
