  • A campaign thread

Hello all. My name is John McLeod. I am running for Minister of Economy. I firmly believe I would be the best choice for this position.

One reason is, well not to brag, but my intelligence. This year I got a 99% on my ITBS bat for overall and got several other 99s. Though I am in 8th grade, I took jazz band, German, and geometry at the high school and then came back for core classes at the middle school. I got straight A's for the semester grades every time except once, in 6th grade I got a B in math. I believe brains is vital in being the Minister of Economy.

Additionally, I am not a computer zombie. I don't sit and play civ 3 hours on end. I play it a lot, but I'm very active. I practice piano an hour a day, practice alto sax one half hour a day, and I exercise. I think this is important, because I'm well rounded.

Also, I am very open minded and I don't do things that everyone else does. I'm not a follower, I'm a leader. For example, while my friends listen to Weezer, Alien Ant Farm, etc. Guess who I listen to? John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Cannball Adderly, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis. I always keep an open mind and I have the rarest mix of opinions you probably have seen in a while.

Another reason is my activity in Civ 3 boards. Yes, there was a two month period where I didn't write anything, that was because I got two new great computer games and I spent time playing those. But that won't happen again, for I have all of the games I want right now and I won't need anymore for another year or two. If you look at forums, you'll see how many replies I have on many threads. In fact, I am writing a story calledTimes of War and Diplomacy that has gotten so far 5 stars, and I rated it four stars, meaning many other people have rated it. It's a popular story, look at it.

And finally, I do happen to have some experiences in financing. My brother and I spent more than 1,000 dollars on a computer a couple of months ago, and we raised all of that money in 9 months, and we did it when I had almost no free time because of school, track, and music.

I believe you should vote for me to be the Minister of Economy. I believe that I would fit the job the best. And if you believe I'm a sleezy politician, you're wrong. I don't lie often, I'm a catholic and I go to church on sundays.

Remember, vote for a man of the people to help manage the people!

    Vote for me!

    Who are the others candidates?

Seeing as you see it necessary to drag unimportant matters into the campaign speach. I thought I'd ask some unrelated questions.

    1) What brand of shoes do you wear?
    2) Do you play soccer.
    3) How long is your hair.

Seriously though I think most of us are more interested in what you can do for the civ or policies for the civ, not whether you play piano.

Yeah, I know. But hey, I just want to be well known. I want the voters to look at the ballot and say, hey I know this guy. I wear nike. I play soccer, and my hairstlye is a caesar (another reason to vote for me). About civ 3, I play on pretty much all difficulty levels. If I want a challenge, I try emperor, though I usually lose on that. When I want to whoop butt, I play on warlord. But remember, I'm not running for pres...yet. I won't be playing the game, just making decisions on trade and finances.

Oh yeah, I forgot to include my opinions for stuff. I firmly believe in having science funding by a large part of the budget. In the bigger picture, science is so important. If you have a more advanced army, victory by conquest and domination is much easier. The space race victory would be easier to achieve, and same with diplomatic victory, for we would have the techs for the UN quicker. In trading I firmly believe in trades that result in us gaining money or techs. I think trading techs among allies is a good way to get everyone on our side more advanced then the bad guys, if you will. I also believe trading away resources to your allies would be good, especially if they don't have that resource. That way we gain money and they can build better units. I also believe that trading with civs that we don't get along with is a bad idea, unless we can rip off. A basic rule of economy is in a trade, each side receives something more valuable to them than they gave. I definetly wouldn't want our enemies to benefit. If you have any other questions about my policies, please post them in this thread and I will answer them

Are you a supporter of raising the luxury slider at the expense of Commerce in order to gain more productivity?

Or do you believe in maintaining steady income and tech advance at all costs?

Hey, I'm running for finance minister too! I believe in giving 10% to luxuries as soon as our cities start getting to size 9 or 10 or we go republic. Science should be up, but if we can gain 30 gold per turn at the cost of only 2 turns for science I say do it! I will ALWAYS check to see if our tech could take the same amount of time at a lower rate, so our treasury stays filled!

In the next term, there will be both a ministry of trade and a ministry of finance.

My questions to the candidates are :
                      - To which posts will you allow more money (in decreasing order) ?
                      - Will you favor the early building of courthouses ?
                      - How strongly will you petition other ministers ?
                      - Do you believe in specialists ?
                      - Do you believe in bananas ?

I believe in maintaining a steady income at all costs. I think saving money is a very good idea. There may come a time where we will have to dig in to our reserves. I would only raise the luxury slider bar if we were having civil disorder.

I do not believe in building courthouses too early. In my experiences, they do almost nothing.

I do not understand a couple of your questions spiffor, please clarify. For one, what do you mean by more money to each post? And do you mean specialists are people with a lot of experience in one subject? I'm sorry, I'm confused.

And about petitioning, yes, I will petition them if they are doing something that the public doesn't want. After all, the people rule!

Vote for one of the people to help manage the people.

To the Candidates: How much of a surpluss would you support if elected? Usually there is a trade off at some point of getting a tech one turn sooner or making extra gold. Do you value getting that tech as early as possible, or would you reccomend going for the extra cash?

                              JohnMcLeod :
                              Sorry I wasn't clear. What I meant was :
                              - give me a list with your priorities, in terms of budget allocation. (ex : military > science > building maintenance > trade etc.)
                              - "Specialists" are people in a city who don't work in the fields, but in the city, and specialize themselves in producing one coin, one bulb, or one happy face, corruption free.

Edit : By the way, in what circumstances will you accept a deficit ?
