Okay, it seems we discovered the Ottomans in the course of our first turnchat. They have Masonry, two cities, and zero gold; we have 25 gold, one city, and no new techs. Our military is weak compared to theirs. They currently have 107 points; we have 57. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do next regarding them?

Keep them happy until we decide to kill them.
In the mean time, take them for all they are worth.
As we are in REX now, no real changes unless we can get a tech or two from them.
Just my 2 cents. If you're interested in participating in the first Civ 5 Community Game then please visit: http://www.weplayciv.com/forums/forum.php

Perhaps the FAM should keep this link handy throughout the game this time? (We used this to ensure our Diplomatic Victory in the first game.)

Treat them normally, attempt to extract gold from them every once in a while, break peace treaties to get more gold when we have a larger military, then kill 'em as soon as civishly possible.Join a Democracy Game today!

The big thing on Ottomans is to make sure they aren't a major player when Military Tradition is discovered, but that is very far in the future and we will have Berskers well before then. Unless we need space right away, there's no need to attack them yet.1st C3DG Term 7 Science Advisor 1st C3DG Term 8 Domestic Minister

The AI, at this point, could come in and in one fell swoop force us to start Democracy Game Part III.
Fortunately, though, even at this level I believe the computer to be stupid enough to pass up the opertunity.Join a Democracy Game today!

I think attacking the ottomans may be the best option when looking at what civs are around us. You can forget about attacking the zulus for now, attacking impis with archers is foolish at best. Any attack of the celts and/or Iroquois would probably have to come very early, before they get their UU's. We dont have that much time. The ottomans are the only civ around without and ancient era UU, not the mention the fact they have given us one more reason to eliminate them by attacking us.
We have terrain-related reasons for attacking the Ottomans as well. They will be much harder to contain based on the terrain. The Iroqious can only expand one direction, south. Everything else around them is tundra and mountains. They will slow their growth eventually. The Zulus and Celts can be seriously hindered an any attack attempt (once we get a few cities) by stationing units on the mountains (or further east when we start settling beyond them).Citizen of the Apolyton team in the ISDG

Well, you know, I know the feel of death. Being a saga-singing, sword-swining, swig-sucking Viking hero like myself, one is very tempted to run around and act barbaric. I always fancied the idea of total slaughter when dealing with enemies, and the Ottomans should be no exception.
In short: Expand, build the army, attack, kill everyone. Maybe, though, for the sake of expansion, spare the cities for a while. That might be best.
