I'm not British so don't think I'm bieng nationalisitic or anything, BUT, the British spelling is the CORRECT spelling. After all, it is the english language. They, having made up the language and how to spell things sort of have a bigger say in what's right in it and what's not.

What you're saying is like me going "I'm going to use the English language, but I'm going to spell everything without the e's at the end because there is no need for them. So anybody who uses the e's is wrong." Follow my logic?

Oh, and aren't side conversations interesting?

By the way, where ARE the Spanish!?!?

Not so fast, buddy! American English has different pronunciation than British English, a different grammar, a slightly different vocabulary, and different colloquialisms. In other words, it's a separate dialect. The brits don't even spell the way words are spoken anymore, why should the yankees follow their lead?

Also, many 18th/19th century british grammarians introduced grammar rules from Latin!

Anyway, the Spaniards should indeed be in Civ3. Go to the Spanish Civ forum and spew your invective!

So you want to say, that for example 'center' would be more right than 'centre'?

Try to explain that to a french :-)

With centre/center, take your pick. A spelling being the "right" one depends on who you ask. However, the owner of Ye Olde Towne Shoppe should get smacked upside the head. Regarding centre, the French have a case for the -re ending, as it reflects the pronunciation.

                  Anyway, sorry Rey for threadjacking...

It's obviously a deep-seated prejudice against chorizo, tapas, churros and gazpacho. And Julio Iglesias (the latter I understand)....

The Spanish deserved to be in Civ III.

More so than the Germans or Japanese.

                          For the following reasons:

                          1. Larger territory under control-- Latin America, parts of Africa, the Philippines, and elsewhere.

                          2. A "true" empire spanning the globe. The Germans had some territory in Africa and the Western Pacific, but the Japanese just called their king an "emperor" even without any territory outside of "Japan". The Germans did the same, however, proclaiming a "German Empire" in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles in 1871. In my opinion, a bunch of German states is not an empire (they didn't even get Austria).

                          3. Great cultural influence: spawned modern-day Mexico, Argentina, etc. Even felt in places like the Philippines. Germany has some regional influence, primarily isolated to Central Europe. Japan also has some, but weaker in places like Korea and Taiwan.

                          4. Linguistic power: over 300 million people in about two dozen countries speak Spanish as a primary language. I estimate that about 90 million people in four countries speak German and 130 million people in one country speak Japanese as a primary language.

                          5. More personas: great kings and queens, vicious conquistadors, famed explorers, etc.

                          6. Longer history and greater length of power: Germany's inclusion in Civ III, I believe, is based largely (not all) on their military domination during World War II. Same for Japan. Neither of these nations had significant power for more than 100 years. Germany unified only in 1871. Japan had its Meiji Restoration in 1868 and only later did it achieve prominence. The Spanish had significant power for hundreds of years prior to the emergence of these two.

This is not to say that Germany and Japan are not worthy of being included as Civs in Civ III, they should be in the original 16. However, I believe it is a tragedy that Spain was not, while they were.
