Hey, datakodin, you might be interested in the thread about Russia in the OT. It would be interesting to hear your opinion of Russia's problems.

        Russia has problems?

Well, Roman - no, sorry. I'm not an expert for AIDS.

Well I find it sad that Russia seems to have such bad prospects for the future and merely think that Russian leaders should try to tackle the difficult problems now, before it is too late.

Anyway, my concern for Russia proves that Pan-Slavism did not die yet.

Szoszon, it is absolutely correct that the word "slave" originates from the word "Slav".

As a kind of retaliation, the Slavs call the Germans as "mute man" - niemec.

                Edit: language, thanx to Martinus.

                  Yeah, it is true.

In early middle ages most slaves in Western Europe were taken from Slavic countries. Hence the word.

And it is true about Germans too (although it is more like "mute man" not "dumb man", as Germans were thought as not able to speak the "normal" language, i.e. Slavic )

Btw, did you know - and this is no bulls*** - that the slang English word "bugger" originated from "Bulgar"? 100 points for anyone who says why

In middle ages the dualist/gnostic/manicheist sects were accused, among other things, of homosexual practices. Without getting into details, there were two main groups of these sects in Europe - Western European (Southern French) albigensians and Eastern European (Bulgarian) bogomils. As the sect however moved to the West from the East, in many countries (including England) they were often refferred to as "Bulgars". With time the word was distorted and acquired the present day meaning.

the word slav came from the word Slaw. That usally ended in slavic last names.
