So what should be the capital of the Vikings?

Should we stick with Civ2's Trondheim, or are there other towns more worthy of being capital?

Hedeby (Haithabu), Birka, Kaupang, Bergen, Sigtuna etc all were important centres.

The principle aim of the Viking attacks on England back in the 1100s, which devastated the great monasteries at Jarrow and Lindisfarne, as we all know, was to get their Spam, a meat product which all Vikings know and love and sing about.
          Empire growing,
          Pleasures flowing,
Fortune smiles and so should you.

            Viking capitals:

It's obvious that the heirs of the Vikings would want some town or city from their own country's Viking history to represent the 'new' Viking capital in an expansion pack; so we could have, for instance, Dublin for the Irish, Jorvik for the British/English, Hedeby for the Danes, Tynwald (Thingvollur) Hill for the Manx, Kirkjubour for the Faroes, Maeshowe in the Orkneys and perhaps Thingvellir for Iceland, as the place where the Republic of Iceland was created, and so on....

              Viking capitals:
Yeah, there are lots of possible candidates. But keep in mind that the capital also is the starting position on an Earth map (or a map of Europe FE). It would be a bit odd to start out on the Isle of Man or in Yorkshire if you play as the Vikings..
No, the capital should be somewhere in the Vikings' homeland Scandinavia. I don't want to offend any Danes, but the capital shouldn't be in Denmark IMO, because it's just too close to the German starting point in Berlin. Threrfore, it's got to be in Norway or Sweden, and preferrably one of these "cities":

              Trondheim
              Kaupang
              Birka
              Bergen
              Sigtuna

Actually for all intents and purposes the Norman invasion of England in 1066 signs the end of the Viking age. The sacking of Jarrow and Lindisfarne happened several centuries before that.

                  Comments on Vikings..

Perhaps a bit to late comments...

                  Cities:
                  Predecessors of Gothenburg
                  1) Skepplanda (Viking age)
                  2) Loedoese (Midevial, also early)

Kongahella is forgotten (?). It SHOULD be included,
as it is an important city of this age. It is today
in Sweden, originally counted as Norwegian.
It is btw. in the old "Lagmansdom" of Viken
(Interesting theory of WHY the Vikings are called
Vikings: They were from Viken! Simple!

                  Oslo is better than Christiania.
Leave out Stockholm.. Founded approx 1250...
Suggested Viking capital: Why not Hedeby
                  (Danish).
                  Female leader: Ingeborg (maybee some
100 years to late, depending on definition)
Swedish-born Queen and co-Ruler of Novgorod, an
                  orthodox saint.

Ruling: The old Vikings used a "Republic" look-alike
ruling. The head were the "Lagman" (Man-of law).
There were also Kings (with little or limited power,
often over only a small area). What is a "Warlord"
(CivII) = not applicable, ruling NOT "Despotism".

                  Rgrds,
                  O

I will second Canute as the choice of ruler.
Leaders: Eric, Leif, Ragnar, Rollo, Rurik, Olaf
attributes: Military, Commercial (possible argument for Expansionist)
UU: longboat, 2.1.4, replaces galley. This reflects their superior naval combat ability, and their skill at voyaging long distances

I really got into playing the Swedes in Europa Universalis (good place to find leader names), and had fun making some Civ 2 scenarios with the Swedish city names and Special characters. German umlauts, Spanish enyas, and French chateaus look cool too. Having Skåne, München, La Coruña, and Châmonix visible gave the map more flavour. Post a Swedish or Viking civ on here, and I'll use it

I vote for Birka as the capital -- not primarily because of national feelings, but when I think about my ancestors that city seems to be the most important.

However I think that the Viking mod should encompass the development of the vikings into scandinavians. I.e. a norwegian city founded (irl) in 1605 should be included in the city names list, at the appropriate spot.

Military and Commercial are the foremost qualities of that culture, so I agree with HolyWarrior.

Longboats would do well as the special unit. England is the only other civ to have a boat as a special unit. Maybe 2/2/3 (a caravel with better offense) that is available a little earlier than the caravel. But that's just an opinion and not based on any facts

Btw, it would also be neat to have the "Karoliner" -- a clone of the musketeer, in game terms, but with a distinctly scandinavian feel to it. I also heard about a special swedish cannon being up for discussion as a UU, if that's possible, lovely.
