  • Why are all the UU's fighting units?

It has just occurred to me that so far all the civ specific units are fighting units.

I was wondering if any of the 16 civ's will have specific units that are non-military, i.e. explorer units or transports etc.

As I understand Settlers (Civ2 version), caravans and spies will not be present in CIV III which cuts down the number of non-military units available somewhat.

I suspect the answer will be no - it would probably be unbalancing ( a more efficient worker would be of greater advantage than a cheep elephant for instance)

    - does anybody have any info on this?

To get your civ's golden age your UU has to win a battle. Therefore, it makes sense that they would all be military units.
I don't do drugs anymore 'cause i find i can get the same effect by standing up really fast.

I live in my own little world, but its ok; they know me here.

you can also trigger your golden age by building a wonder with the same civ-specific abilities as your civ, so you don't have to have a fighting UU to trigger your GA.

personally i would like to see non-fighting UU, i'll probably have to make them myself when i get the game

          Peaceful golden age trigger!

You can also trigger a Golden Age by building a Major Wonder that matches your civ-abilities. Fx. The Great Wall is an Industrous
and Militaristic wonder. Therefore the Chinese (militaristic/industous civ) would get their Golden Age by building the Great Wall!

Interesting. I missed that conclusion to the peaceful golden era debate. Glad to see at least one alternative was included for the peacemongers.

It seems they have tried to remove as many non-essential units as possible which can only be a good thing in comparison to the sometimes overwhelming number of units in a Civ II game. CtP had more but the army stacks and PW system meant they were not so scattered and awkward to control.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

So basically, certain wonders will trigger Golden Ages for relevant civs? Did I hear you correctly? Because if so, this is a good alternative to the 'war' method of Golden Aging.

i'd like a superworker, or "Mounted Settlers", with 2 moves

With the editor, you can make your own UUs that act as such...

...for example, an explorer for the Spanish (XP). (No attack, high movement rate)

Yes, that is correct. You have to build wonders that match with your abilities if you want to trigger a Golden Age peacefully. So if you are Chinese and you are militaristic/industrious, you can trigger your golden age by building the Great Wall or any other two wonders (the Great Wall is the only one that is both militaristic/industrious) associated with militaristic or industrious civs (I don't know what they are, but say Hoover Dam and War Academy would satisfy the right criteria). I read this somewhere, but I don't remember where (well, it was either here on Apolyton or somewhere that I heard about here).
