If the Romans get a second CU, what should it be? Providing the first CU is the Legion.

Liburnian: Rome's warship of choice after Augustus, fast and powerful. Replacing the Galley
Quinquireme: Rome's warship of choice before Augustus, fitted with a catapult. Replacing the Galley
Cataphract: Heavy cavalry first used in the 1st century AD. Replacing the Knight
Onager: Siege engine, replacing the Catapult
Pretorean Guard: Elite Guards of the Emporer, replacing spearmen/swordsmen

The Guard sounds too limited a unit.
Most cultures have a secret, elite guard.

I suppose the Quinquireme is the best choice of a second unit.

Praetorian guard was just a legion that took part in politics. They really weren't a combat unit. But i do like their special rules!

However rome was famous for its sieges as well as its legions. So some sort of siege unit would be appropriate.

Or perhaps a culture looting unit. If it captures a city, all your cultural improvmenets get shipped back to its hometown. With a percentage lost due to camp followers. :-)

Just to debate a bit : I think Liburnians were already in service at Augustus´ times, not only after the time of his reign. I read somewhere that Agrippa, Octavian´s admiral used them in the battle at Actium 31BC.

BTW, Cataphracts would be a good choice IMO

I'm having a hard time understanding the logic behind these latest threads. Isn't it supposed for each civ to have a single CU? Or is this just an academic poll?

Bebro, you're right. Replace the "after" with "since"

Assault tower. They were brilliant in sieges.

Siege tower unit, I like it.

How bout attack 2 (they were used by infantry)
defense 1 (should it be lower?)
and of course, ignores city walls.

It would be neater if it just allowed other units in its square to ignore city walls, but I don't think that fits with the special rules of the game.

A simpler unit would just be an enhanced catapult.

The romans weren't really famous for their navy, so I don't think any of the 'remes are appropriate. The only naval advantage they had was their big boarding plank and their use of marines.

An interesting fact is that during the first punic war, the romans didn't have any clue how to build warships, so they copied a wrecked carthaginian ship.
