I stand by my statement that I want a proper Austronesian civ, which would make the Khmer the obvious choice. Other ones I'd like to see eventually are Mongols, Spanish, Kilwans, Arabs, Turks, Incas and Ku****es, but I definately think the current set is good enough for the initial release. My fear is that the expansion pack might unbalance the game as it stands.

Well yeah, if there is an expansion pack, there will be a large number of extra civilisations. So I would expect that the Incas, Arabs, Spanish, Portuguese, Turks and Mongols would be included, perhaps even Sioux, Poles, Celts, Vikings (or Scandinavians of some description).Speaking of Erith:

Ok, so I was a little irked that the Iroquois were in and not the Phoenicians (or Spanish, or Mongols, for that matter)...

In addition, good replacements for the Persians would be the Dutch.
The remaining 14 should stay.

Arabs, most definitely. Their past and present role in the world has been VASTLY underestimated.
