  • AU 504 Glory of Culture Civilization Choice

It looks like the prevailing sentiment is currently to settle on one civ for everyone, but several civs have been nominated. The nominations I've noted are:

    India (Religious/Commercial)
    Korea (Scientific/Commercial)
    Babylon (Religious/Scientific)
    Japan (Religious/Militaristic)

I hate to put up a poll without waiting for additional nominations or for verification that I haven't left anyone out, but we should be able to get something we like reasonably well out of this and it would be hard to wait for more nominations and still get a poll up in time to get the game started this weekend.

Note that while the official duration of the poll is two days, it may be cut off any time after one when the scenario is ready for release. So I would strongly recommend voting sometime today (Friday).
    24
    India (Religious/Commercial)
    29.17%
    7
    Korea (Scientific/Commercial)
    25.00%
    6
    Babylon (Religious/Scientific)
    16.67%
    4
    Japan (Religious/Militaristic)
    8.33%
    2
    Other (Specify in the thread)
    8.33%
    2
    Don't care
    12.50%
    3

    The poll is expired.

I voted Korea (more SGL help), but India would be fine too.

Babylon and Japan are also great Civs

6hp elite War Elephants are CULTURAL, I swear!!!

The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

I went with babylon because I really think thats the best choice to attract any nOObs that maybe lurking.

And if we do go with a different CIV I think we should consider (despite the numerous reservations) including babylon as a "second Civ Choice" for that reason.

For the record, Ill play whatever one we decide

If a 6hp elite War Elephant says it's cultural, I certainly have no intention of arguing with it.

Actually, it occurs to me that war elephants are about as powerful offensively as AU Mod cavalry - 4/5 the attack value but 5/4 the hit points for veterans - and are stronger defensively, although their lower speed makes it easier for enemies to counterattack them. And compared with samurai, the defensive advantage of an extra hit point is almost as big as the defensive advantage of an extra point of defense value. All in all, at least on paper, the War Elephant looks like it is now one of the nastier UUs in the game - and it doesn't even require any resources to build. It will be interesting to see how it works out in practice if we end up playing India.

              Babylon.

If you use your UU before it is obsolete, you are likely to 'enjoy' a despotic GA. This should discourage warmongering a little bit, which is IMO good for a culture-themed AU game.

Voted for Japan. I think that heavy and early fighting will be required in this game. Oh, and those ultra-early temples too.
                Seriously. Kung freaking fu.

Yes... following my drubbing at your hands, I've getting more active with PBEMs, and re-assessing civs and UUs in that regard. I have been developing the thought that India is perhaps an unsung hero...

                    Korea.

But the others are fine too.

And after all, Theseus wants India.

Yep - India is real good civ. That is why I think we should try Korea, where the UU is somewhat more limited, and the civ less played - as far as I can tell.

pity you didn't add more choices, "other" just never has a chance

i'd vote sumeria and persia before the religious civs, despite war elephant "culture".

multiple selection would have been advantageous too...

Too bad Japan seems to be out of the game. I had really hoped for a "conquer the continent ASAP, then build it" game from someone. This one is not so much a choice for non-militaristic civs.

                              Korea (of course!)

But India would be great fun to play too
