I have had a lot of luck by taking the AC you have and putting him on that mountain. As long as yo do not get all 16 to attack you, it could do the job.

I am not sure of the no attack NW or whatever it is, but if you had the AC on the mountain and they did not attack you could kill them one at a time. If you wait to heal before any attacks.

You get those 6 HP at elite, so it is hard to lose one on one. If all come, then at least it could take down quite a few.

Figured it was a CH prebuild Except I'm surprised it's not still building workers until at least 1 or 2 hills nearby are mined.

Maybe your way is better. I typically have my outlying cities, especially those with lots of food, produce workers until I have developed the terrain enough such that I can hope for at least 2-3 shields/turn net.

Citizens of Lutetia, it's time to panic!
Even the Spearman garrison runs away, leaving the newly-founded town undefended.

Fortunately, Iron has just been connected, so we burn all our cash in Warrior-to-Legionary upgrades.

Next turn, the barbarian horsemen all attacked vacant Lutetia, and received our entire treasury of 23g as their loot. They promptly decided that barbarian life does not pay well at all, and proceeded to vanish into thin air.

Not too bad, good thing no more barb captures city as in Civ2. I remember a few barbs citys cranking some horse type units. I want to say they were knights, but I can't recall. It was ugly though.

And now you can position some legionaries to get hit by whatever horsie stacks are left around, getting them promoted.

vmxa1 - I vaguely recall a game of CivII where a civ that started on its own island got wiped out by the barbs right away. They took the capital and just hung out for thousands of years, building units slowly but surely. It took me a while to deal with them all. IIRC, they got up as high as the CivII equivalent of Cavalry, whatever it was called (think it was 8.3.2?).

Sorry for the OT, but thanks I was not sure. I think they were crusaders.

After dealing with the barbarians in Roman territory, the Roman army resumed its march north to harass the Celts. No hostilities have yet started, but the Ancient Cavalry are roaming around Celtic borders looking for a chance. Legionaries are holding back, however, as orders have come from Rome to delay any Golden Age until after the Forbidden Palace has been built (estimated in 10 turns).

Caesar is still saving gold, and researching Monotheism at a 50 turn pace. The gold will be used to rush-buy some infrastructure so that the Roman Golden Age is more efficient. Remember, the plan is to slow down the tech pace so our Ancient Cavalry and Legionaries last as long as possible.

Greece has entered the Middle ages, and has either received Engineering as well, or has not yet traded their free technology to the AI. Since Egypt acquired Engineering this turn and signed peace with Greece, it actually might be that we were lucky and everyone received Engineering as their free tech.

Since Rome no longer has a technological lead, the age of world rage against Greece has ended. Alexander will be happy, but his people might not be.

Well this caught me by surprise! Is the AI is going to settle 3 tiles from both my city and his (Theveste and New Pompeii), to steal a couple of tiles from me?

The AI city placement in C3C has taken a lot of flak, but I think it's actually better than in PTW. It uses wide spacing when it has room, and tight spacing when it doesn't.

He would if he knew of a resource or lux being there, otherwise he may just be in transit.

You're right vmxa1, they're in transit. False alarm!

In other news, Persia and Greece have a right of passage agreement, which will no doubt lead to Greek units passing through Persia to meet Carthage (see minimap in a previous post).

But Caesar saw a chance to make Persia revoke their right of passage with the Greeks. The Celts and Persians have been at war for a while, although the distance between the two empires have prevented any fighting between them. Caesar agreed to a enter military alliance with Xerxes against the Celts, if Persia agreed to go back to war against the Greeks. Thus started the great Romano-Celtic war. The Roman army found the Celtic army exposed in transit to Persia and ambushed them in marshlands.

So the Roman Golden Age has started, and we pray to Mars for Great Leaders. As you can see from the number of Gallic Swordsmen in the Celtic Army, the war will not be easy.

I should send you two a gift or something for the entertainment. I am getting quite a few chuckles out of reading each of you getting the AI to switch sides all the time.

Nothing very exciting has happened over the past hundred years, except Egypt and Greece are now at war. Caesar suspects that Alexander has recruited Babylon and Germany to squeeze Egypt because Cleopatra settled a horse town quite close to Greece.

With one quarter of our golden age over, we are still focusing on infrastructure. We have built the Forbidden Palace in Cumae (not the best location, I know, but Caesar ordered it to be built ASAP for the OCN bonus). We also started building Courthouses in the Western part of the empire, so that it continues to be productive after the GA. Marketplaces are also being built in core cities in preparation of the soon-to-be-connected third luxury (dyes).

The Romano-Celtic war continues, as Brennus continues to provide a steady supply of Gallic Swordsmen for the Legionary training program. Mars, however, has not yet blessed Rome with a Great Leader.
