whats betterthan finding a new city? if you have just started out an extra city is always good..
Well my opinion on this is that the new city is good if you get it b4 you found your capital. Otherwise it is usually too far away and corruption and waste are bad (unless you ICS) and it is usually in a bad location anyways.
I am with the guys that want a good non 2 movement unit from the first hut for more hut tipping and exploration."I know not how I may seem to others, but to myself I am but a small child wandering upon the vast shores of knowledge, every now and then finding a small bright pebble to content myself with"

"but who could argue with a village that teaches you monarchy?"
I'd rather learn the ancient art of nuclear fission from a hut...
Back nearly a decade ago when I first started playing Civ1, in my first game, I walked over a hut and barbarians popped out, so I assumed the huts always did that, and never checked another one for like a couple of years

this is true..... and although most cities are placed poorly..... sometimes an early city has minimal overlap and is actually a benefit !
When this happens i let out a big war whoop and proceed with agressionBoston Red Sox are 2004 World Series Champions!

In one game, the first hut I tipped gave me an advanced tribe, much to my delight.
However, in the very next turn, a barbarian horseman pillaged the undefended city and since my initial two settlers were still busy tipping huts, I lost the game.
I finally got to see the end screens -- cool.

What am I missing here. Two people have now mentioned getting a city from a hut prior to laying their first city down. I thought that it was common knowledge that before you laid down your first city, all you could get was money, units, or sciences. (no barbs, no settlers, no cities) Yes, I've heard the tales of people who go hut hunting and finally got a city close to AD...
Again, what am I missing here Are we playing the same game?Keep on Civin'

Good question Ming! I think some posters' memories are playing tricks. The very first time I visited this site I recall reading how somebody found Mass Production in a hut - mass production of myths!
Before any city is built the only outcomes from villages are:
Gold or a Unit or a Science - and you must have the prerequisites for the tech. No Monarchy without Alphabet/Code of Laws/Ceremonial Burial

Yes SG... I remember the famous "I got Mass production from a hut posts"
I also remember those who took my goody hut hunt approach far beyond 2000bc and claim to have gotten a city before laying a city down.
And I also remember experimenting after hearing that. I tried resetting a hut before placing my first city down over 1000 times, and all I got was gold, a unit, or a science that I had the preregs for... Now granted the year was about 2500BC... so I can't discount that it might not happen later in the game, but I did it at that time frame because that is about the latest I would ever go using that strategy.
Maybe they were playing TOTKeep on Civin'

Stop it... that's how urban legends continue
But watch the beers, or you may pass out during a game like I did
Keep on Civin'
