I've seen some comments here that seem to imply that there's a situation in which your defensive unit will be completely invulnerable. I gather that the situation referred to is having only one city, and having one unit in that city, or something like that. Once again, I want to know whether there's any evidence for such a claim, or if it's an urban legend. If it's true, can someone tell me exactly what situation creates the invulnerability?

single unit in only city invulnerable?

As a general rule, yes. 99.9999% of the time, yes. Your defender in your single city will see off attacks by units that would otherwise crucify it.
But not 100% of the time as I - and others - have discovered. No one seems to know what causes the rare disastrous exception.

Yikes!
I guess I should just get my mind set that it's going to happen sometime and not be too upset when it does.
Those to whom it's never happened dismiss the fact that it does occasionally happen as a glitch in the game.

If an AI tribe has a single unit in its only city, it is also invulnerable to Barb attacks.
Mind you, the AI does not know this, and will happily use its sole Phalanx to attack the incoming Barb Dragoons, if it is so inclined

I've noticed some other interesting features of the combat systam.. My warriors seem to consistently beat Barb. archers when they are attacking my capital. As this is on Deity and the warrior is normally not veteran nor on good terrain, I find this suspicious. He does take damage, but typically only 1/3.
The other thing was when I attacked a stack of two AI caravans with a vet. knight. Granted they were on a mountain, but I still didn't expect my knight to be trashed by a unit with a defence of 0. And yes, I'm certain that there was nothing else stacked with them."Wise men make proverbs, but fools repeat them."

Ok I start a solo game.I wandered awhile so it was a bit late.Around 2600bc when I found my capitol.A few turns later,2 barb legions show up.I'm not worried though.First one sends my warrior to red, loses and makes my warrior a vet.2nd legion attacks and wins destroying me.Game over.Wasn't even 2000bc yetThe only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

I wonder if this is a "feature" of the Macintosh port. In years of playing, not only have I never lost my capital to barbs, but my defender has never even taken any damage! In one of the first OCCs I ever tried, I was on the barbarian shipping routes. They kept dropping off legions adjacent to my capital. I would let the legions kill themselves attacking my city, then sally forth and pick up the leader.

Do we know if any PC players have suffered the fate? It's only happened to me - Mac player - a couple of times, but it's a couple of times too many.

I guess the game combat engine has some random factor that rarely makes VERY unexpected results.
My freight is also survived after an armor attack when he was on hills.(Emperor)

In my first successful OCC four barb dragoons landed adjacent to my city. I only had a vet horseman in it and thought it was game over. The health bar didn't even move...
It has never happened to me in any game. I play on a PC.
I have lost my capitol to barbs when I had a second city, though...

Okay, I had to try it out. I just created a situation with five barbarian howitzers outside a single city with just an unfortified warrior in it. Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! (Warrior brushes dust from unmussed hair and toasts marshmallows in the smouldering wreckage outside of town.) Wheee!
