  • record attempt(yes I am nuts:D )

Reading the post "Highest score on Civ2" I got this really insane idea. Why shouldn't I try a record attempt?
So first I went looking in the Hall of fame here so see what my actual goal is: 15782 pts,2051%(I'm playing CivII 2.42)
Ok now I'm convinced, I'm nuts , so this means I will go through with it.
But there still are some questions:
-In the other thread a read a referral to the fact that Ming would even have succeeded in scoring over 20.000pts,So I would like some more info about that event( difficultylvl, exact score, random map or homemade map?,...)
    -What is allowed??airfielding mined hills&mountains,...
    ...

    Game set-up is:
    Civ2.42
    Deity----Raging Hordes----7civs----restart of killed civs
Random map: 80x125 (couldn't get any bigger)
    --->big landmass/continents/temperate/4b years old/average humidity
    ->Civ:the Americans

Starting location wasn't to bad (whole alone on an island big enough for a dozen cities)
Indians already got killed by the French (now they're the Sioux)
Got a hut with 50g and one with an advanced tribe, and a barb leader.

Any kind of comment, info and ideas is welcome

I'll put the history here (easier to keep track for everyone who wants to)

umm - so I guess we'll see your next post to this thread with your result in January or Febuary - that's if you're able to sustain playing 6 hours a day for the next few months. We'll miss you. Oh yeah - and the rest of us will already have a few months of Civ III under our belts by the time you come out of seclusion.
That's all the encouragement I could come up with.

If I remember correctly, (ming, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
I had scored in the 18,000 somewhere, Ming easily (if you can all that sweat easy) and kept going to almost 21,000 to discourage me from trying again. We had traded records 3 or 4 times.

Deity, raging, random large map. It was before MP so it wasn't the gold addition. It was before a lot of the cheats were known, so I'm sure we didn't use the airbase trick, unless it was actually just an airbase. I don't think we rehomed caravans.

I am sure we tried a few starts untill we liked one.

Good luck, we will start preparing the rubber room now.

But please keep in mind that someone has done 30,000. don't know what rules. And the Ming an I both launched before the final year because the boredom was getting to us. I think I launched in 1950, and Ming only last long enough to beat my score, then he launched early also.

If I had had to play to 2020, I would have shot myself.

            thx rah

then I also keep the airbase thing out(actually it's rather annoying when you use it and then need to transfer an entire airfleet, btw who needs this to create big cities, caravans will probably do as well)
Q:why aren't those in the hall of fame???
(best I saw was >17000 but that was using FW)

Why aren't they in the hall of fame? I believe we did the scores before the Hall of Fame was created and didn't have saved games. But the main reason was we were only completing with each other. I saw him playing once he had passed my score and didn't need to see the save game at the end. There has always been honor in all of our personal competitions. (besides I knew I didn't have the patience to beat his record again) We really didn't think it was a big thing, except to us of course.

                Good luck,
You will start dreaming of moving 500 food caravans a turn. (hint) when you pair up the cities that you're going to do the food caravan tricks with, make sure they are on the same side of the y=0 coordinate and close enough to each other that the "go to " command works right. That will save you from some of the madness.

I look forward to seeing your reports sometime next year.

Maybe this is a game where multiple people could contribute - each taking a turn of tedium to spare one person from the full effects.

So my advice would be to turn this into a succession game.

Otherwise a game like this is simply a game of endurance.
It's the kind of thing you'd do while in prison to kill time.

PS I might try a partial turn just to see the food caravan trick in action, but that's it.

Another approach: write a program to buy 40 shields for 235 golds in all your caravan-building cities (assume that you have 10 shield production to finish the caravan the next turn). The program will check if you have discovered gunpowder, and go through the city information part of memory. For each of your civ's city, the program will check if it is building caravan and have 0 shields accrued. If so, the program will purchase for it. (If you don't want a city to get purchased shields, just change the building target before running the program).

After you have established your empire, each turn you deliver commodity caravans first to accrue enough money then run the program---pppppf!! However at start of each turn you still need to select commodity for each caravan, and that takes a lot of time.

To facilitate moving, you need a fast computer, and name your cities in pairs (for example, 1A0, 2A0, 1A1, 2A1, ... 1A9, 2A9, 1B0, 2B0, ...). 1A0 and 2A0 will be closest to each other, and you always send food caravans between them, so you won't make a mistake.

How do you write a computer program to interface with the gui of another application?

Now that I think about it, I guess there are QA-tools that you hear about QA people using to automate tests of gui programs. Maybe you could get ahold of some of those tools. Could be as simple as teaching the tool a procedure by certain click movements to automate it. Don't know the names of these QA tools - I'm sure a google search would come up with a few. And they're not cheap either, I'm sure.

As far as a naming convention, having a [1-2][a-z][0-9] format seems confusing (you might make the mistake to pair up 1a1 with 1a2 instead of 2a1.)

                      I'd use [a-z][a-z][0-1] as a naming convention - then there's no ambiguity.

Just talked to a buddy in our software QA department.
"QAPartner" apparently works on general gui
another one which is for web-based enabled gui is
                        "Silk"

Angelo's CSPL can do this but it's for TOT. You can find threads about CSPL in SLeague forum and TOT forum. Allard's "everything for hex editing" thread provides information on what to search. I have written a program before for MPE so I know it can be done. I don't have 2.4.2 or I would write it myself.

I think there should be honor in all competitions, that's also why I will certainly not use any program that takes over the foodtrading part, like there is suggested here.

You will start dreaming of moving 500 food caravans a turn.
What's so bad about that??It's better than dreaming that you are hunted by a differential equation (don't ask how and why)
(hint) when you pair up the cities that you're going to do the food caravan tricks with, make sure they are on the same side of the y=0 coordinate and close enough to each other that the "go to " command works right. That will save you from some of the madness.
Well the pairing up will go (with a written list in my left hand and mouse in right) between 2 neighburing cities(max 8 squares away i hope)(I'll keep in mind the X=0 axis)

Freshman:As you said it will be a game of endurance, and I really don't think it would be a good Idea to make a succession game out of it(it would even take longer then it will do now,and it will have a lesser chance of success.)
PS I might try a partial turn just to see the food caravan trick in action, but that's it.
Why do you need this game for that? You can do this in any game you want,eg you have an island with 4 cities and your capital, then just let those 4 create foodcaravans and deliver to your capital==> It's the same thing I will be doing but only for one city.

Freshman and Xin Yu:as said before such a program is out of the question.and about the names=>it will be city-names,NO COORDINATES

But, if you are going to do it... use any program help you can.
Words can't even begin to describe just how BORING it will be.
Once you get to the food caravan stage, and only one surrounded enemy city left... ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Good luck. I think Xin calculated that the best you can do is around 30,000 points... so if you keep your sanity, keep us up to date
