  • Civ2: Running out of fun

The post may be misleading. Civ 2 is the best game of all time, and a small part of me believes that Civ 3, while new and modern and changed, will still not be able to master the feel that the Civ genre needs and deserves. Anyways, here's my problem.

I've been playing for a long long time and frankly, I can't lose. (single player at least). I have to put the tech down to 70 (1/7 the normal rate) in order not to finish by 1200 ad. (i always play king level). The only way I can be stood up against is if i try very hard not to expand too quickly and go out of my way to prevent other nations from warring with each other too early. I love to play but the fun is running out.

What I would like, is some ideas for landshape, player placement, etc that would improve the playability of the game. We all tweaked with maps and such for a good gaming experience. I am out of ideas for good maps and wanted to know if anyone else could offer any ideas of their own that they've tried and thoroughly enjoyed. My imagination is pooped out. Thanx.

This may sound stupid, but why not play at Deity?

      having fun

      Yes, why not deity?
      And why not scenarios?
Why not 'Mongol' that we are playing now (at least arii and me), in order to get some kind of friendly competition on the top of it?

I like best the early part of the game, where you are just getting started and exploring the world. For a change of pace, here are some ideas:
          1) Your game technique must change at deity, try it.
          2) Try the one city spaceship challenge(OCC). It is a quick game,
and you will learn some things.
          3) Try bloodlust on a maximum sized world. This is one of the
          harder things to do.
          4) Try a minimum sized world(25x40) with a purple civ. You will
get a really bad start, and the terrain is really ugly.
          5) For a change of pace, try the alien invasion scenario.
          6) For a challenge that you can win only perhaps 5% of the
time, try to build ALL of the wonders at deity.

Play as you normally do, then start cheat mode at 1ad. Change human player to the civ that is pathetic, and see if you can overcome your old self.

Scenarios are often good fun. Try Red Front for a challenge. You must deal with big losses, there is no way around it.

            Play deity level, raging hordes.

Or, open the map editor and give yourself a truly awful starting spot - small, desert island, for example.

            There's fun to be had!
