Well i love the warrior defence , and i will push it to monarchy if i can......yes there are times when i am cursing myself, but its all about risk and reward.

most of the time i am "lucky" or smart enough to put warriors on good defensive terrain to deter barbs, or to at least get an early warning system going...

heck the other day, i escorted a legion (whom look frightened) out of my territory and into Rah's territory....
    with only warriors....

i prefer bronze to horse as well...unless i come across cash from huts like 50g and i am about to build on the same turn...

if i get 100g its an automatic settler, but i will still take horse first to fill the second row and save some $'s

If you don't get out on the board , the warrior defence is brutal b/c the barbs start coming for your neanderthal civ......

but if you do get on the boards......usually your fine, unless you get that lamer tribe on plains which if i have the cash i just build and disband asap to get the nomad

I'll sometimes do that (especially if there's a great city location 1 or 2 squares away) but if there's grassland nearby it will grow to size 2 (in 2x) fast enough that I will rush the settler as soon as it grows, It's cheaper (buy a rack every turn or so) and you still get the extra city out of it. The only risk is not losing the city until the settler get's settled. If it works, you can keep popping settlers until the city gets picked off. And if you surround the city, it may even survive long enough for you to convert it to forest.

normally i'll just build settlers, while rushing towards bronze, then have 1 planax in all my cities.
